Scott E. Richmond, born October 4, 1958, went home to be with his Lord and entered heaven’s gates on May 19, 2013.

Scott spent 32 years working as a mechanic for Seattle City Light and recently retired in January, 2013. He was a talented man and spent much of his time wood-working and playing music on his 5 string viola which he crafted with his own hands. He also enjoyed motorcycles and had recently fallen in love with restoring old Honda Goldwings. He was multi-talented and it was said of him that he was “the jack of all trades.” He was a devoted, loving husband to his wife, Deborah and spent many an hour caring for her. He had a servant’s heart and was often found helping others. Whether it be fixing a vehicle, helping a tourist who had locked their keys in the car, or just sitting with a friend, you could count on him. He brightened many lives with his infectious smile and his bright blue eyes. It was clear to those around him that he truly loved and cared for them. His presence here on earth was cherished by many and will be missed.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Deborah Kay Richmond of Marblemount; son, Joseph Andrew Richmond; daughter, Amanda Marie Hinners; step-daughter, Andrea Marie Hastings; parents, Stewart and Jacquelene Richmond; brother, Christopher Andrew Richmond; sister, Michelle Kay Altizer; grandmother, Margaret Clark; four grandchildren and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends and other family members.

He was preceded in death in 2009 by his brother, Mark Steven Richmond.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 25, 2013, at the Community Bible Church of Concrete, 45672 Limestone Street, Concrete, WA, with Pastor Rob Thomas presiding. Final resting place will be at the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Cle Elum, WA. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Cancer Society or Diabetes Foundation.

Glenda Jean Petty, 74, a resident of Sedro-Woolley, WA passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA of lung disease.
She was born on August 20, 1938 in Bellingham, WA, the daughter of Glen and Agnes (Storm) Lamphiear. Jean was raised and attended school in the Ferndale – Bellingham area.
Her mother re-married and the family moved to Sedro-Woolley. Shortly after, Jean met Charles Petty (Chuck), after he returned home from serving in the U.S. Army. At age 15 Jean and Chuck were married with both sets of parents giving their blessings. She said she fell in love with his hazel eyes and his new car! They had three children together, Mike, Becky and Nancy.
Jean was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandma, great-grandma, and friend to all who knew her.
Chuck would often laugh when telling the story about their early years of marriage. He said “he would often come home from work to find Jean had packed all their belongings and moved them to another nearby home”, until they made their permanent residence in Sedro-Woolley on Harrison Street for over 35 years.
Jean was a rare gem with unique talents and abilities. She was a great cook who loved to have Sunday dinners and holidays with family. She taught herself to sew at a young age and made many clothes, costumes, blankets, and doll clothes for her own kids and grandchildren.
She rejoiced in her individuality, taking pride in finding herself. Throughout the years she would take classes at the Community College, where she learned typing, computers, and writing.
She ventured outside the home on occasion experiencing a variety of different occupations. She truly had the gift of gab; there was always an interesting conversation at mom’s kitchen table.
Her passion, her love was writing stories; although, time ran out for her to soon, illness struck hard and that novel was never finished. Her fondest memories she would say were her trips and camping with her husband and family.
She is survived by her son, Mike Petty (Sherry) of Lyman, WA; daughters, Becky French (Walt) of Birdsview, WA, Nancy Petty of Sedro-Woolley, WA; sister Joan Marshall (Gary) of Bellingham, WA; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
No immediate services are planned. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Clarice “Joan” Huston passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at the Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood. She was 88 years of age.

She was born on July 15, 1924 in Iuka, Kansas, the daughter of Charles & Mina (Blue) Parker. She moved to Laverne, Oklahoma where she was raised on a wheat farm.

When she was eleven, the family moved to Lyman, and there she lived on a dairy farm. Joan attended Sedro-Woolley High School, but her family moved to Burlington for her senior year. She graduated from Burlington in 1943, but has always gone to both towns’ reunions.

After graduation she worked in Everett during the war at Soundview Pulp Mill and Boeing. She returned home to meet Dale Huston and it was love at first sight. They were married on February 17, 1946 and made their home in Sedro-Woolley. They had two children, Douglas and Gail and Joan was very active with her children.

She was a Girl Scout Leader and a Boy Scout Leader and got her children into swimming and bowling, and she was on a Woman’s Day League at Sedro-Woolley Bowling Center where she was 7th in her league for top score.

The family all learned how to snow ski and would take the camper to Mt. Baker and on many other camping trips, she also loved to fish and camp. One of her relaxing loves was gardening. She had both vegetable and flower gardens at her home in Sedro-Woolley and at their 2nd home in Winthrop. Swimming was also a relaxing love and in Winthrop she had a lovely swimming pool and in Woolley she had Clear Lake. She made sure everyone learned how to swim so she could go often. In Winthrop she also cross country skied and got hooked on walking. She belonged to the Skagit Treckers and went on many five and ten mile walks.

Joan is survived by her son, Douglas Huston (Jane) of Bluffton, OH; daughter, Gail Browning (Jackson), Sedro-Woolley; she was blessed with five grandchildren, Mike Turan, Clint Nicholas, Rose Nicholas, Douglas Huston (Rosie) and Brandon Huston (Joy) and five great-grandchildren, Kailee, Landon and Blake Huston and Tyler and Cody Turan; her sister, Rena Aldridge of Sedro-Woolley; brothers, Wallace Lynn Parker (Delores) of Mount Vernon, Nolan Parker (Bonnie) Spokane, WA, Galen Clive Parker (Jeanette) Ferndale, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale in 2004; sisters, Clella Wilson and Elizabeth Meinette; brothers, Hap Parker, Les Parker, Cliff Parker and Jim Parker and grandson, Clint Nicholas.

The family would like to give special thanks to Josephine Sunset for taking such good care of mom for four plus years, and a special thanks to her CNAs, especially Lisa and Heather who showed her so much love and care.

A Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Central Valley Assembly of God Church in Burlington with Pastor Ed Leckenby officiating. Visitation is available Monday thru Friday from 9am to 5pm. The family suggest memorials be made to Josephine Sunset’s Good Sam Club, 9901-272nd Place NW, Stanwood, WA 98292.

Harold Edward “Ed” Hoyt, 80, a resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away at his home on Saturday, March 16, 2013.
Ed was born on January 28, 1933 in Sedro-Woolley, WA, the third child born to Bob and Mary Hoyt of Prairie, and the grandson of Joe & Annie Hoyt and Charles & Anna Newberg.
Ed grew-up in the small community of Prairie, where he attended grade school at Samish and graduated from the Sedro-Woolley High School with the class of 1951. During his high school years he worked part-time for Tradewell Food Stores in Sedro-Woolley, a Seattle based supermarket chain. After graduation he started working full time in Sedro-Woolley and then later in Mount Vernon, where he worked his way up to assistant store manager. In 1954 he was promoted to district relief manager for the chain’s northern district, and in 1955 he was promoted to manager of the Mount Vernon store. In 1956 he was transferred to Seattle where he managed several stores in the greater Seattle area.
Ed left Tradewell Stores in 1957 and went to work for the Foods Division of The Borden Company as a sales representative, where he would serve in various sales positions and locations over the next eight or nine years. During this time he also worked part-time for A & P Food Stores and went to night school at the U of Washington. In the mid 1960’s he transferred to the Food Division’s new military sales unit, working out of San Francisco, CA, covering the Pacific Northwest as district sales manager. In 1970 he was promoted to regional sales manager for the southern region, headquartered in Atlanta, GA, with responsibilities for the 13 southeastern states. Then in 1974 he was transferred to the corporate headquarters in Columbus, Oh, where he set-up and directed the marketing and new business development department for the military sales unit. In 1976 he was asked to join the Food Division’s new foodservice sales unit as regional sales manger for the central region, headquartered in Chicago, Ill, with responsibilities for the 11 central states.
In 1978, and after almost 22 years with The Borden Company, Ed left the company and joined the Foodservice Division of Del Monte Foods, as central regional sales manager, a position he held until 1986 when he was asked if he would like to transfer out to San Francisco, CA as western regional sale manager with responsibilities for the 7 western states, plus Alaska and Hawaii.
In 1956 Ed had married Hazel M. Martin of Sunnyside, WA and together they had two children, David Edward and Jayne Marie. In 1986 he married Joan F. Welk of Oak Lawn, Ill.
In 1989 Ed decided it was time to take early retirement and go back home. During the 38 years that Ed spent in the food industry he received many honors and awards for his achievements, to which he always said that he was only doing his job. After spending a few more years in the bay area and doing some traveling, it was now time for Ed and Joan to head home and start building that retirement home on “The Ranch” at Warner Prairie, that they had started planning when they bought the ranch from the families back in the mid 1980’s.
Though Ed left Sedro-Woolley and the Skagit county area many years ago, he never lost his strong ties to his family, friends, and to the community where he grew-up, which he was always proud to talk about. Shortly before his death he was asked if he had any regrets as to his life. “When I was 12 years old I was stricken with phenomena and rhythmic fever, which left me with a severe heart condition, which greatly restricted my physical actives. Like most boys of my age, sports was a big part of our lives. It was always so hard not being able to participate, but only able to just stand on the sidelines and watch. But then the good Lord has been very good to me all these years, with a wonderful family, great friends and good health. So I guess, I really have no real regrets.”
For many years Ed was a member of the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle. He was also a long time member of the Port Angeles Naval Elks Lodge, #353, and was a past president of The Sedro-Woolley High School Alumni Association, to which he continued to be active in the association for many years. Though Ed followed the sports and the business world, in his later years his attention turned more and more to working on his ranch, being with family & friends, and spending time with his two dogs Addie & Nate, just roaming through the woods and field at the ranch. Ed also spent a great deal of time researching and writing about the Hoyt family history, as he felt it was so important that this history be preserve for all future generations.
Ed is survived by his son, David of Yakima, WA; his daughter, Jayne Hoyt; grandson, Dustin and great-granddaughter Kiena of Zillah, WA; step-son, Richard Welk and step-daughter, Margaret Welk-Cook of Chicago, IL; and his dog, a faithful companion, Annie.
Ed was preceded in death by his father in 1974, wife Joan in 1994, mother in 1999, brother Don and sister Mary Ann, both in 2002 and his two dogs Addie and Nate, who became his constant companions during the later years of his life.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, March 22, 2013, at the Union Cemetery, Sedro-Woolley.
