Betty Marie Stiles

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

Betty Marie Stiles, age 89, a longtime resident of Sedro-Woolley passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 following a tragic fall at home.  Betty, affectionately known as Nanny, was born in Wichita, Kansas where she grew up with her twin sister and two older brothers.   Betty graduated from Wichita North High School in 1944, and graduated from Wichita State University in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts and Science.    She met William A. Stiles, Jr. while at college. Bill and Betty married in Wichita on December 18, 1949, and recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.    They moved to Sedro-Woolley in 1950 and raised five sons and one daughter.

Betty was an active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, and served as a den mother for her sons Cub Scout Troop 70 for many years.   She enjoyed sewing and over the years made many prom dresses, pajamas, Halloween costumes, and countless other keepsakes.  Each one of her grandchildren received a unique quilt made by Nanny.    Everyone who entered into Betty’s home was immediately treated as family.  Betty may be the mother or grandmother of 41 members of the Stiles family, but she had many more unofficial members of the family that held a special place in her heart.  She loved to attend the sporting events, school programs and concerts of her children and grandchildren.   Nanny was a great cook, famous for her butterscotch pie, and pfeffernuesse (German cookie) at Christmas time.  She was a passionate fan of the Mariners and Seahawks.  She enjoyed summer road trips with the family back to Wichita, vacations to Europe, Australia and Hawaii, and many cruises including one through the Panama Canal.   But, her favorite place of all was home.

Her faith and family were the most important aspects of her life.  Nanny leaves a beautiful legacy of compassion, kindness, and love.  Everyone loved Nanny, because Nanny loved everyone.

Betty is survived by her husband William A. Stiles, Jr.;  her children, Bill III (Kim), Bob (Donna), Brian, Bret (Sherilee), Brock (Katherine), and Becky Adams (Greg); her grandchildren, Rob, Avery, Adam, Melanie, Sarah, Alicia, Brendan, Sarah, Jonathon, Zack, Kaylee, Jordyn, Wyatt, Grace, Mary, and Drew; and her great-grandchildren, Maddee, Josie, Lincoln, Kinsey, Emry, and Austen; her twin sister Norma Morgan of Wichita, Kansas; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Ida Brock, her brothers Joe Brock Jr. and Merle Brock who were both killed in World War II, and daughter-in-law Ann Stiles.

The family asks, in lieu of flowers, a memorial donation be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1006 Wicker Road, Sedro-Woolley, WA  98284, or to the American Cancer Association, 3120 McDougall, Suite 100, Everett, WA  98201 for breast cancer research, as Betty was a breast cancer survivor.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday December 30, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 1006 Wicker Road in Sedro-Woolley.  A reception will follow at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.  Share memories of Betty and sign the online guest register.

I am so sorry for your loss. Betty was such a kind and sweet person and now she is a sweet angel. Noel and I just heard about this as we are living in Florence Oregon now. You will always be remembered for your kindness to me when Jane Ball passed. Brian you and your siblings were certainly blessed to have Betty as your mother.

I was blessed to have seen over the years how Betty interacted with her children and grandchildren. She was such a loving and caring person. When I retired from the law firm, I looked forward to being more involved in the lives of my grandchildren and always thought of Betty. Thank you for allowing me to see such a great example of Love!

We have only been acquainted with Betty for the last four years but always felt her warm and caring spirit which touched all who knew her.

Our family are very fortunate to have known Betty. My mom and dad Art and Thelma had many a fun time with Bill and Betty. Mom is in the hospital and not able to contact Bettys family but I know she would want to say what foud memories she has of Betty. And I know her prayers and thoughts are with Bettys family as are mine. Leah

I was fortunate to be able to get to know Betty (Nan) when I worked for Brian and Brock at their Law Firm. She was a true gem and carried about her an amount of compassion and grace that few others achieved. She was never too busy to stop and genuinely ask how you were and what was going on in your life. And hugs were a given when seeing her! She was proud of all her children and grandchildren and was always happy to let you know how they were each doing. She was a strong woman and I am beyond blessed to have known her.
I send you all my love and deepest sympathy on the loss of such a beautiful woman. Thank you for sharing her with me.

May Psalm 34:18 help you through this most difficult time…
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
