Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Aileen Berkness Brue, age 89, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Birchview Memory Care in Sedro-Woolley surrounded by her loving son and daughter-in-law.
She was born on March 30, 1919 in Conway, WA the daughter of the late John and Ella Berkness.
Aileen attended schools in the Skagit Valley area and graduated from Mount Vernon High School with the Class of 1937. Although she had met her true love, Henry G. Brue, her strong belief in education postponed their nuptials while she attended Seattle Secretarial College.
Upon graduation, she married Henry G. Brue at the Fir Conway Lutheran Church on March 1, 1941. Aileen worked in Civil Service with the Department of Agriculture for 10 years. In 1952, Aileen gave birth to the couple’s only son, Greg. They raised Greg, Aileen’s pride and joy, in the Mount Vernon home that her father built for them.
In 1968 Aileen obtained her real estate license, becoming the second woman in Skagit County to sell real estate as a sales representative for Hill and Hill Realty. She worked in real estate for 23 years and was an active member of the Realtor’s Board, serving as board president in 1977. She won various awards including Co-Salesman of the Year in 1971 and Realtor Associate of the Year in 1974. Aileen retired from real estate after the death of her husband and later worked at Christina’s Fashions and Vales Apparel.
Aileen was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church where she sang in the church choir. Throughout her retirement she enjoyed playing bridge, shopping for anything purple, and traveling with her closest friends. She later resided at Creekside Retirement Community in Burlington where she participated in a variety of activities and enjoyed ice cream for lunch each day.
As ‘Nana’, Aileeen loved and adored her three granddaughters and encouraged them to grow into strong, independent women. She taught her granddaughters to value education and took great pride in their many accomplishments.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Cheryl Brue of Sedro-Woolley, WA; granddaughters Bethany Belisle and her husband, Nic of Arlington, WA, Brianna Brue of Wenatchee, WA and Belinda Brue of Sedro-Woolley, WA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry G. Brue in 1983 and her parents.
Memorials are suggested to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society or Skagit Hospice.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Creekside Retirement Community for their care over the past 4 years, Dr. Deborah North, Birchview Memory Care, and Skagit Hospice.
Private Graveside Services will be held at the Mount Vernon Cemetery with a Memorial Service to follow on Friday, May 23, 2008 at 1:00 PM at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating.
