Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Bernard E. Penley, Sr., 86, a lifelong Skagit Valley resident, passed away on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at Skagit Valley Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Bernie was born on February 10, 1921 in Burlington, Washington, one of eight children of Charles & Alice Watkinson Penley. He was raised in the Alger area and attended the local Belfast grade school and then Burlington High School. He served his country in the Merchant Marines during WW II.
On June 10, 1947 Bernie was united in marriage to Wanda Joy Mitten and they raised three children.
Bernie worked for the Operator Engineers Union Local #302 as a heavy equipment oiler and equipment maintenance man in the construction industry, and was proud to receive his 50 year watch and pin.
Bernie was known for, and took great pride in, his hours of labor tending to his yards and gardens over the years. As most know, his landscaped yards were much like parks, with no weed daring to grow. But Bernie’s greatest joy came from his family and friends. He liked nothing more than to have people stop in for a visit or have everyone get together for a picnic in the park. If anyone came within ten feet of his yard, he would strike up a conversation because he genuinely enjoyed people.
Bernie will be greatly missed by all.
Bernie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wanda, at the family home in Mount Vernon. Their children, Charles ‘Chuck’ Penley and his wife, Barbara of San Ramon, CA, Terry Watts and her husband, Bill of Birdsview, WA and Bernie ‘Bud’ Penley and his wife, Teresa of Sudden Valley, WA and Bernie’s daughter, Carlene ‘Penny’ Fellers of Burlington, WA. His brother, Jack Penley of Sedro-Woolley and 2 sisters, Lorraine Overway and husband, Jack of Port Townsend, WA and Jeanne Handwerk and husband, Bud of La Conner, WA. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Shirley Hovde, Noni Nelson and June Hastings and 1 brother, Robert Penley.
The Penley family extends a warm & heart felt ‘Thank You’ to the caring and sensitive staff at Skagit Valley Hospital. They also request that memorials be made to the Veteran’s Association.
Funeral Services will be held at Lemley Chapel on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at 11:00 AM with Chaplain Wayne Stiles officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the Bow Cemetery. Visitation is available at and services under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
