Caine Luke Covert, 34, a resident of Big Lake, Washington, died on Friday, June 20, 2008 from injuries sustained in a work related accident.
He was born on April 27, 1974, in Portland, Oregon, the son of W. David Covert & Gail Sundean.
Caine was a skilled journeyman carpenter, certified welder and a talented hobbyist mechanical engineer.
He was the steel Crew Superintendant for Fisher & Son’s general contracting. Everyone who worked with Caine respected his work ethics and talent for his job. He whole heartedly believed that you should work hard for your family and not for yourself. ‘Put up or shut up’ and ‘Go big or go home’ he would say. He often showed pictures of his job site and talked excitedly about what was happening on his current job or what they were going to be doing next. He told his brothers once that his favorite time was when it rained in the morning and his work bags filled with water and he was knee deep in mud. He loved his job and his company for which he gave 15 years. We all tip our hard hats to him, he died doing what he loved.
Caine spent his off hours helping friends and family build their homes, fix their cars and generally went out of his way to do whatever he could. He spent countless hours helping others, never asking anything in return but a thank you or a Red BullTM. He had a never quit attitude which inspired everyone around him. Knowing Caine was a gift.
He was a hardcore off road and rock crawling enthusiast. He competed in Rock Crawling events from Canada to Reno to the deserts of California. The walls of his house are covered in Rock Crawling awards ranging from Best of Show to First & Second Place. There are many pictures of his Scout II and his 4X4 club, S.N.O.R.T.
In 2004, Caine spent numerous hours at S&N Fab building the rock buggy of his dreams. The design came from his head. Caine built the buggy from the ground up with his best friends that he loved. Once the buggy was built, he spent hours and days ‘wheelin!’ Caine’s best times included his family and the S.N.O.R.T. and Fisher crews.
Caine is survived by his wife, Erica and their children, Wyatt James 5 and Trinity Gayle 2. In their 17 years together, Caine and Erica were still very much in love. ‘He never ceased to amaze me’ Erica said.
He is also survived by his mother, Gail Sundean and her husband, Scott. His parents-in-law, Dale & Marlene Klein, with whom he loved very much. Dale was a mentor and a father figure to Caine. His three brothers, Jake, Josh and Lyle. His previous step-father, Dan Lohman whom he called dad; step-siblings, Hawni & Tyler; sisters-in-law, Becky Klein & Courtney Covert; brother-in-law, Duane Klein; Grandparents, James & Doris Blair, Bonnie Wondolski and Don & Beverly Sundean. Uncles, John & Sam Blair, Brad Huggler and Craig Klein. Aunts, Mary ‘MeMe’ Huggler & Shelly Klein; nieces, Aspen & Arreanna and nephews, Ryley, Justice and Jesse James, and numerous cousins and extended family.
Caine was loved by all that had the privilege to know him and given the respect he so deserved. Caine will never, ever be forgotten. He will be in our hearts forever. Caine, we love you!
Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Sedro-Woolley High School Auditorium. A reception will immediately follow in the school cafeteria. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Caine Covert Memorial Trust Fund, for his children, c/o any Skagit State Bank. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
