CHANCEY W. PITMAN
Avid fisherman, hunter and teller of tall tales, Chancey W. ‘CW’ Pitman, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Sedro-Woolley on Thursday, September 27, 2007.
He was born March 13, 1932 in Emmett, Idaho, the son of Heber and Elizabeth Galbreath Pitman. His family moved to Big Lake, Washington in 1934 where he attended school until the 8th grade.
CW enlisted in the U.S. Army in July of 1949 and served in the 2nd Calvary Division during the Korean war where he was wounded in combat 3 separate times. He received a purple heart with three oak leaf clusters, a combat infantry badge, various campaign ribbons and several marksman awards before leaving the army in 1952.
He was united in marriage to Marguerite Austin on April 8th 1954 in Sedro-Woolley. They moved to the family homestead in Sedro-Woolley in 1962.
CW worked in all manners of construction for 30 years and won an award for a ‘perfect’ building he built at Western Washington University. He retired from the carpenter’s union in 1977 while working for Newland Construction. That same year, CW, Marguerite and George & Lorene Pitman opened Fruitdale Nursery in Sedro-Woolley where they served both retail & wholesale businesses all over the Puget Sound and the local community until they retired again in 1997.
CW enjoyed fishing the Skagit River, hunting, gardening, raising pheasants, fishing at the cabin on Whidbey Island, woodworking and beekeeping; He was also an excellent marksman and could fix ‘anything.’
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Austin Pitman. Their children, Debbie Randy Lyster, Mike Jody Pitman and Carol Weide and her companion Mike. 7 grandchildren, Jeremy Brandie Perkins, Jaymee Weide, Kimberley Anthony Pellegrini, Kristie Samuel Jones, Elizabeth Dustin Laberta, and Curtis and Rachel Pitman, and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his 3 brothers, George Lorene Pitman, Floyd Pitman and Dick Virginia Pitman and 2 sisters, Colleen Bernard Straight and June Floyd Browning as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. CW was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Jean Prather and brother-in-law Robert Prather.
A memorial service celebrating CW’s extraordinary life will be held at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley at 2:00pm on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 with Pastor Rick Miles officiating. In Lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Wildcat Steelhead Club where he was a member for years, or to your favorite charity. Cremation arrangements and services are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
