Edwin ‘Ed’ Varhaug passed away at his home on Lake Whatcom on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 surrounded by his loving family. He was 61 years of age.
He was born on August 20, 1944 in Carrington, North Dakota, the son of Jarluf & Nellie Zaharko Varhaug. He was raised and attended grade school in Juanita, ND and attended and graduated from Carrington High School with the class of 1962. He was active in school sports, holding records for basketball at Carrington High School.
After high school he worked as a gas station attendant in Fargo for a while, moving to Minneapolis, MN where he worked for American Hoist. After traveling the south, working at various jobs, in 1966 Ed moved to Seattle where he worked as a machinist for the Boeing Company for several years.
In 1967 he was united in marriage to Irene White in Seattle and they made their home in Monroe.
Ed started his own cable tv construction business, Electrical Installations, located in Tacoma and over the years that business grew into a variety of cable tv ventures. In 1993 he started Index Cable TV, Inc., a TV Cable broadcasting company.
Ed enjoyed a variety of sports; basketball, golf, NASCAR racing and softball. He was active in softball leagues, with his teams winning several championships over the years.
He was also a member of the Eagles and Elks clubs and the W.A.C.
He is survived by his wife Irene at the family home on Lake Whatcom. His children, Matt Varhaug of Burlington, WA and Mandy Varhaug of Monroe, WA. 1 brother, Orville Varhaug and his wife Mable of Pine Bluff, AR, 2 sisters and their spouses, Carol & Jim Cummings of Rapid City, SD and Judy & Jerry Hagel of Bellevue, WA and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Todd Varhaug and a niece, Jami Sue Hagel.
Memorials are suggested to The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714 or to a Missing and Exploited Women organization.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Monroe Community Chapel with Pastor Michael Richardson officiating. A celebration of Ed’s life will be held at the Blue Boy Ranch following the memorial service.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
