Emanuel R. Schmidt “Smitty” passed away January 5, 2014 at home.

He was born in Lander, Wyoming on August 12, 1920 to Jacob and Elizabeth (Rein) Schmidt.  Following his graduation in 1938 from Riverton High School, he enlisted in the 115th Cavalry of Wyoming.  When World War II started, he transferred into the 515th Parachute Division and served in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.  He returned to the States at the end of the war, settling in Riverton, WY for several years before moving to Washington State.  He owned and operated Smitty’s Auto Body Shop for many years and also worked at Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Woolley, WA before retirement.

He and his wife traveled a great deal in later years, always returning to Riverton, which was his second home.

He was a life-long member of the 115th Cavalry Association of Wyoming.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Nora; two daughters, Lynn Hamilton, and her husband, Rick, and Lore Schmidt; two grandchildren, Janice Gill and Neil Hamilton; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Thomas J., Ricky, Makayla and Gavin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jake Schmidt and Henry Schmidt; four sisters, Katherine Schmidt, Elizabeth Turner, Marguerite Dow-Mowery.

At Smitty’s request, there will be no services.  Memorial Contributions may be made to the Clear Lake Fire Fighters Association, PO Box 186, Clear Lake, WA  98235, or a charity of your choice.
