Esther M. Burkhart, age 98, passed away Friday, July 27, 2007 at the Forest Ridge Health & Rehab in Bremerton, WA. She was born March 31, 1909 in Valparaiso, Nebraska, the daughter of Charles and Christina Westman Alm.
Esther graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1928 and then attended Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in Seattle and received her RN Degree in 1931. She worked as an RN at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton for a short time before residing in Sedro-Woolley working at Memorial Hospital and United General Hospital from 1931 to 1974 in Sedro-Woolley and Evergreen Nursing Home in Mount Vernon.
She was married to Norman Burkhart on April 18, 1940 in Mount Vernon and he preceded her in death in 1952. Esther was an active member of the Sedro-Woolley First Baptist Church since 1946, Sedro-Woolley Garden Club, Washington State Nurses Association and she also enjoyed reading, gardening, and family gatherings.
Esther is survived by her son, Kenneth Burkhart and his wife Evy of Portland, OR. and two daughters; Ardith Rehfeld and her husband Rod of Port Orchard and Myrna Hayes and her husband Gary of Garland, TX. Four grandchildren; Janette Folks and her husband Patrick and their children, Titus, Caleb, Jared, and David of Santa Clarita, CA; Julia Gindorf and her husband Tom and their children, Madeleine, Emma, Sophia, Thomas, Ian, and Amelia of Oakhurst, CA; Crystal Moore and her husband Bobby and their son Wesley of Rosebud, TX; and Erika Harris and her husband Brian of Littleton, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Edythe Sheret.
Graveside Services were held Monday, July 30, 2007 at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to The Gideons, PO Box 152, Mount Vernon, WA 98273 or Child Evangelism Fellowship in Warrenton, MO.
