Frederick Ward Slipper, age 90, died October 30, 2007 in Olympia, Washington. He was born May 14, 1917 to Gertrude and Fred G. Slipper in Hamilton, Washington.
Fred attended elementary school there and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1935. He attended the University of Washington for three years and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Fred married Virginia Fellows of Lyman, Washington in 1940.
Fred spent two years in Europe during World War II and returned to Sedro-Woolley, Washington in 1946 and began his career in banking. In 1950, he and Virginia and their young family moved to Ritzville, Washington where he accepted a position as manager of the Ritzville State Bank.
In 1975, Fred retired from banking and he and Virginia returned to Sedro-Woolley where be began his second career as manager of the Courier Times newspaper. Fred was with the Courier Times until 2000. While at the Courier Times, Fred also discovered a talent for writing short articles and he wrote 264 installments of ‘Slipper’s Soliloquies’ for the Courier Times, chronicling life and times in the Sedro-Woolley, Lyman and Hamilton region of Skagit County during his lifetime.
Fred was proud to have been the first World War II veteran elected Commander of the American Legion Post in Sedro-Woolley. He was also proud of his membership in the Lions Clubs of Sedro-Woolley and Ritzville for over 60 years.
Fred is survived by his wife Virginia Slipper of Olympia, Washington. His sons; Fred H. of Olympia, John of Seattle, Andrew of Spokane, and his daughter, Mary Leisle of Spokane. Nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside Services will be Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Hawthorne Lawn Memorial Park in Mount Vernon with Pastor Jay Wise of Burlington officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Sedro-Woolley Lions Club. Arrangements and Services under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
