Gerald DeWayne ‘Jerry’ Mapes, 82, a nearly lifelong Skagit Valley resident, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2008 at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon.
He was born on November 30, 1925 in McLeary, Washington, the son of James & Mabel Silverthorne Mapes.

From 1944 to 1946 he attended Navy V-12 officer training school at Berkeley, Cal Tech and the University of Southern California. He then briefly attended the University of Washington until returning to the Skagit Valley in 1947 where he began a 50 years career as a crop farmer.
Jerry grew cucumbers, raspberries and other crops but was more notably known for his acres of strawberries, providing summer employment for hundreds of kids around the Skagit Valley for many years.
He also served as a Dike District 12 Commissioner for over 25 years.
Jerry loved the outdoors, just being out with nature and the soil. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, working crossword puzzles and games on his computer.
On December 1, 1978 he was united in marriage to Lila Compton in Mount Vernon and for the past 30 years they have made their home in Sedro-Woolley.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Lila at the family home. His two daughters, Jennifer Tonheim of Sedro-Woolley and Melissa Schmidt and her husband, Kerry of Stanwood.
