Gertrude Nicholson

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Nicholson, 88, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident, passed away at United General Hospital on Saturday, April 5, 2008.
She was born on May 8, 1919 in Cullowhee, North Carolina, the daughter of Eular & Ellen Mills Ensley.
Gertie was raised and attended school in North Carolina.
On November 20, 1940 she was united in marriage to Hillard Nicholson in Clarksville, Georgia and they relocated to Washington in the early 1940’s.
They enjoyed 65 wonderful years together.
Gertie was a homemaker dedicated to caring for her husband and only daughter, Peggy. In her later years she enjoyed every opportunity to take care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was an avid seamstress and gardener. If she wasn’t tending to her beautiful flower gardens, you could find her tilling the soil of her vegetable garden, making sure there wasn’t a weed to be found. In the fall when harvest time arrived, she enjoyed canning and sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends.
In her lifetime, Gertie spent many hours at her sewing machine making clothes for herself, her daughter, and other family members. She also made many beautiful quilts and numerous crafts. In addition, Gertie loved to cook. Two of her great-grandchildren, Andrea and Alicia comment frequently that no one can make oatmeal like great-grandma Gert.
Gertie also loved spending time with family, helping others and attending church at the Hamilton First Baptist Church where she was a longtime member.
Gertie had several dear friends and a special relationship with her sister, Janie. Janie would call every Sunday at 3:00 in the afternoon just to check in.
Gertie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy & Wes Allen of Sedro-Woolley. Her grandson, Rod Allen and his wife, Nancy of Kent, WA. Two granddaughters and their husbands, Kristie & Jim Fine and Kerri & Roger Helgeson all of Mount Vernon. Six great-grandchildren, Andrea, Wes, Alicia, Zack, Cole and Katelyn. One sister, Janie Parris of Cullowhee, NC. Two sisters-in-law, Margaret Nicholson of Sedro-Woolley and Pat Nicholson of Lyman and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hill, in 2006 and a brother, Lee Ensley.
The family offers a special thanks to the caregivers who cared for Hill and for Gertie the past several years. Without you, it would not have been possible for Hill and Gertie to realize their dream of living at home until passing on.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or to the Hamilton First Baptist Church.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Ron Edwards of the Hamilton First Baptist Church officiating.
Interment will follow at the Burlington Cemetery. Visitation is available at and services under the direction of Lemley Chapel.
