You were one of the best people I’ve ever known. It was great to have served with you. You will truly be missed. Rest easy, my friend.

Joel was my best friend in the Army. He was a loyal paratrooper to the end. I sat next to him on the aircraft the night his parachute collapsed. We exited the bird into the highest winds we ever jumped into. He was fearless and we all would have followed him into the unknown. Someday we shall share a beer together in that airborne bar in the sky. All the way!!

    Joel and family

Joel you were one wild and crazy guy, but that is what made you special. It did not matter where or when I would run into you, you always had a smile and always picked me up and gave me a huge hug and said how the heck ( to say it mildly) are you. I will miss that tremendously. To Dana, Taylor and Seth he was a good man, father and friend. He will be missed. Rest in peace my friend.

We have not had any contact since your divorce, but I guess that’s how life goes. You did make quite an impression on me. The first time I ever laid eyes on you, you were under the hood of an old Ford Bronco at your house in Concrete. I didn’t know what to think of you at first, your way of talking kind of set me back. I soon learned that was just the way you always talked and I accepted that. You’ve given me many fond memories like the time you came to visit in Kansas City after our tornado and the firemen came by to give me a tetanus shot and let you try on all of their gear. You were as excited as any kid I’ve ever seen visiting the fire station. I think on that same visit you rode your first horse (that was a sight to behold). Later you visited us in Oskaloosa after I retired and moved. We had some severe weather while you were there and you and Seth ran out into the hail trying not to get hit. You were a good man. I know you had your demons like we all do, and later those kind of came between us but I want you to know that I always liked and respected you. It’s too bad we wait until a time like this to say such things. My heart aches because of what your parents are going through because no parent should have to endure this kind of pain, and also for your daughter,my grand daughter for all the memories she will not make with you.I want you to know that my hope for you was always to find love and happiness. I also want you to know that all is forgiven. My hope now is that you find yourself in the arms of Jesus surrounded by love. We will miss you my friend, rest in peace.

My only regret is not stopping by the last times I was in Concrete. I’ve lost part of my tribe…
My grandpa always said… “Never say “good by”, good by means forever.. Always say “so long”, because it’s just a little while”.
So long my friend. I’ll see you in a little while…?
Blessings to family and friends who mourn his passing. Peace and love.
