John E. Harkness, 77, a resident of the Acme community, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2007 while out doing what he enjoyed, fishing on the Skagit River.
John was born on January 7, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Frank & Ethel Olmstead Harkness. His family moved to Washington when John was five months old and he was raised and attended grade school near Acme and attended and graduated from Mount Baker High School.
On March 29, 1952 John was united in marriage to Nadine Schauman in Acme and they made their home there until John left to serve his country as a Corporal in the U.S. Army Security Agency during the Korean Conflict.
John was a long time member and Deacon of the Acme Assembly of God Church, where he attended since 1949 until the church moved and he then attended His Place Community Church.
For many years John owned and operated his own logging company and road construction company.
His greatest love was his family and the great outdoors where he said, ‘you always feel al little closer to God upon a mountain.’
John was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Daniel and 2 brothers. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nadine at the family home in Acme. A daughter and son-in-law, Debi & Curt Haug; 3 sons & daughters-in-law, David & Jodi Harkness, Drake & Shannon Harkness and Dane & Linda Harkness. Grandchildren, J.D. Harkness, Sarah & Ryan Bolton, Nathan Harkness, Doug & Shane Harkness, Kelley Harkness Johnson, Rebecca Harkness Bell and Mandy Sutton, and 2 great-grandchildren, Tyrick Bell and Claire Nadine Bolton. 2 sisters, Virginia Handy and Mary Barnhill and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley. Interment will follow at the Saxon Cemetery.
