Lela Alice Shomshak

Tuesday, October 30th, 2018

On October 12, 2018, 94 year old Lela Alice Shomshak left this earth dressed in mauve and sparkles to be in the loving arms of Jesus.  Many of us referred to her as Grandma, even her own children.  Grandma was born on May 5, 1924, to John Francis and Flora Bell (Myers) Petty, in Chanute, Kansas.  She grew up with several brothers and sisters in a Christian family.

As a young lady, Grandma met and married Cleland Roscoe Frank, and together they had four children, Larry, Lee, Eugene, and Shirley.  After Cleland’s death, she met the love of her life, Dorn Winston Shomshak.  They married and had a daughter, Sharon.

Dorn and Lela Alice raised the five children in Sedro Woolley, Washington, and attended the Free Methodist Church, where they were both faithful, devoted Christian’s until their deaths.

During her lifetime she was a Bible School Teacher, a Sunday School Teacher, and was involved with the Christian Youth Crusaders.   She also enjoyed bagging candy for the Church Christmas events.  Grandma was an oil paint artist, enjoyed traveling, shopping, going to garage sales, crocheting, singing, reading her Bible, and telling stories.  Her memory was sharp as a tack until her death, and her stories were priceless.  Her favorite color was mauve pink and she loved pretty things.  Her favorite flower was the sunflower and roses, and her favorite hobby was having a meal out in a restaurant.  One of her favorite songs was “Where the Roses Never Fade”.

Grandma was of course preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husband Dorn in 2001, brothers, Frankie (and Grace) Petty, Johnny Petty, Howard Petty; and twin sisters, Yvonne Bridgeman and  LaVonne Morgan; in-laws, August R. and Mabel J. Shomshak;  brother-in-law, Vernon Shomshak; sister-in-law, Lillian Dorman; and grandson, Kurt Wyatt.

Grandma lived long enough for many of us to get five generation pictures with her, so there are many survivors to list.  She is survived by her siblings Carl (and Ruchelle) Petty of Kennewick, WA; sister-in-law Jeanie Petty of Everett, WA; sister-in-law June Shomshak of Ballard, WA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Some of my first memories I can think of when thinking of great grandma involve her making homemade pies and running around on her farm. There is nothing like a warm pie from a person so pure and one with God. Grandma proved to me that God exist through her faith and positive outlook on life. Anytime I would see grandma she would say she has been praying for me and loved me. One thing I’ve learned is forgiveness and faith through her stories.
