Leland F. Trial

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

Leland F. Trial, 67, a longtime Burlington area resident, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon after a brave battle against cancer.
Lee was born in Taft, Texas on November 30, 1939, the son of Francis & Jean Snoga Trial. He was raised and attained his education in the San Antonio area.
In 1958 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country in Viet Nam and was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor until his discharge in 1968.
Lee was united in marriage to Phyllis Melton in Mount Vernon in 1966; they met at a dance in Oak Harbor when Lee asked Phyllis to dance, even though there was no music playing, and that was the start of their lifelong love affair. They made their home in Sedro-Woolley until moving to Burlington in 1970.
Lee worked as a maintenance mechanic for Stokley VanKamp in Mount Vernon until its closure in 1980 and then as a service mechanic and welder for Cascade Natural Gas for 21 years, where he formed many strong friendships. He retired in 2001.
Lee was a man whose heart and love for his family was as big as his home state of Texas and he was a committed husband, father and grandfather, and friend to anyone who had the good fortune of knowing him. He was a true Southern gentleman who was concerned more for his families well being and helping a neighbor in need.
He was quite the craftsman and an artist at woodworking, crafting all kinds of things in his extensive woodshop. He also enjoyed working in the small orchard around his home tending to his fruit trees and also working crossword puzzles. He was also very proud to be a ‘Plank’ owner on the U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation.
Lee is survived by his wife, Phyllis at the family home in Burlington. His son and daughter-in-law, Tony & Desiree Trial of Sedro-Woolley and his daughter and son-in-law, Shawna & Tracy Powell of La Conner. Four grandchildren, Taylor, Austin & Shea Lynn Trial and Maggie Powell. His mother, Jean Gorka of San Antonio, Texas; Two brothers and their wives, Allen & Linda Trial of Fischer, TX and Shelby & Kathy Trial of Forest Circle, TX. A sister-in-law, Arbie Adams and her companion, Greg Self; a brother-n-law and his wife, Gary & Jan Melton and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Trial and by a sister, Norma Jean Ploch. Memorials to a charity of your choice are suggested.
Funeral services will be held at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley on Friday, March 23, 2007 at 10:00 AM with Father Pat McDermott officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at the Burlington Cemetery.
