Lena A. Scales, age 90, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2008 at the Life Care Center in Mount Vernon, Washington.
She was born December 11, 1917 in Seattle, Heights, Washington to Emil and Tekla Holmberg Balzar. Lena grew up in Birdsview and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1935. She was married to Roy E. Scales on January 30, 1937 and they resided in Birdsview for many years until Roy’s passing, she then moved to Sedro-Woolley. Lena was a member of the Samish Valley Grange, Birdsview Grange, Skagit Rebecca Lodge in Mount Vernon, Royal Neighbors, and the Sedro-Woolley Museum. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, baking cookies and pies, and volunteering at the Senior Center.
Lena is survived by her two daughters; Connie Eldridge and her husband James of Caldwell, Idaho and Joyce Carpenter and her husband Bud of Mount Vernon. 6 grandchildren; Roy Eldridge, Ray Eldridge, Victoria Fowler, Elaine Madison, Marsha Lyski, Ruth Keeling, and ten great grandchildren. A brother; Tony Schinner of Kooskia, Idaho and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roy in 1977, a great grandson Lewis Eldridge, a brother Kenneth Balzer and one half-sister and two half-brothers.
Memorial Services will be Friday, August 1, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Ken Wagner of Bethany Covenant Church in Mount Vernon officiating. Inurnment will be at the Hamilton Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Sedro-Woolley Museum or a favorite charity.
