Leopoldo Carbajal ‘Poncho’ Garcia, age 71, passed away on Monday, March 26, 2007 at the Kindred Hospital in Seattle surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on November 15, 1935 in Ciudad de Hidalgo, Michuacan, Mexico, the son of Crecencio and Maria Carbajal Romero Garcia.
Leo has been a resident of the Skagit Valley since 1955 coming here from Mexico with his adopted parents George and Myrtle Rush.
Leo was united in marriage to Flavia Tenorio on February 17, 1957 in Acapulco, Gro, Mexico and they had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He has resided at Punkin Center since 1959, where he worked for Scott Paper as a logger until he was injured in a logging accident on June 20, 1974.
Leo was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and a member of the International Woodworkers Union. He was an avid Mariners baseball fan, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing, his family and friends get togethers and traveling to Mexico, but most of all he enjoyed and loved his family. He was lovingly known as ‘PAPA’ by his grandchildren and nieces and nephews, as well as he will be remembered for his courage and positive attitude in dealing with the adversities and challenges he faced, his addictive personality, and as a humanitarian with the ability to communicate personally with everyone he met.
Leo is survived by his wife, Flavia at the family home at Punkin Center. His children, George Garcia and his wife Tammy of Burlington, Mike A. Garcia of Burlington, Isabelle ‘Cookie’ Warner and her husband Bob of Sedro-Woolley, Leo T. Garcia, Jr. of Benton City, WA, Rick T. Garcia and his wife Reba of Punkin Center and Rosario Moreno of Burlington. 12 grandchildren, Rachel, Kristen, Madison, Samuel, Melissa, Seth, Aliscia and Micheal Garcia, Robby and Katie Warner, Ian Van Natta, and Ayanna Dovi-Dotsi. A sister, Maria Schulze and her husband Julius of Birdsview. Numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and his ‘adopted’ son, Jeff Robinson and his wife Danise and their daughter Whitney. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lupe Patino.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 2, 2007 at 11:00AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Sedro-Woolley with Father James Dalton of Arlington as Celebrant as well as honors from the Knights of Columbus. A Rosary will precede the Mass at 10:30 AM. Cremation will follow the services with inurnment in Mexico at a later date. Visitation will be available on Friday and Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday evening from 7 PM to 8 PM at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley.
