Marilyn Hope Edson, age 85, a resident of Burlington, passed away peacefully with her entire family by her side on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at St. Joseph Medical Center as a result of complications following a cardiac bypass. She was born on March 2, 1927 to John and Ruth (Thompson) Kellogg in Amelia, Nebraska.
After receiving her nursing degree in 1959, she worked for 30 years as a LPN at Burlington Memorial, Northern State Hospital and Portal. After retiring she was an owner of a pilot car business until she was forced into early retirement against her will, a year ago, at the age of 84 by her bossy sons.
She enjoyed gardening, baking and was well known for canning her famous sauerkraut, but her true love was spending time with her friends and family. Marilyn was a past madam president of the Burlington Eagles #3242.
Marilyn and her husband were well known for welcoming their children’s friends and making their home a second home for them. They never turned their back on a young person no matter their troubles; you were always welcomed with a warm meal and a safe place to stay. In 1970, after their own children left home they became foster parents to many children. They have encouraged and helped young children by giving them the confidence to better themselves.
Marilyn is survived by her sons, David Edson and his wife, Joan of Burlington, Stanley Edson and his wife, Deanna of Sedro-Woolley and Steven Edson of Burlington; grandchildren, Micheal Edson and his wife Kaley of Sedro-Woolley, Leslie Watts and her husband Rodney of Sedro-Woolley, Amy Lee and her husband Jason of Burlington, Craig Edson and his wife Alisa of Sedro-Woolley, Justin Edson and his wife Stephanie of Sedro-Woolley and Darcy Engler and her husband Ben of Sedro-Woolley; 12 great-grandchildren and a baby bun in the oven; her brother-in-law, Ron Edson &his wife, Velma of Seattle, her sister in law, Nelda Ruth Edson of Mount Vernon and her cat Corky.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roscoe Edson; and son, Dennis Edson. She was also preceded in death by her partner in crime and best friend, Betty Bussing.
The family would like to especially thank the ICU staff at St. Josephs and the physicians at North Cascade Cardiology for their wonderful & compassionate care given.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley, with Pastor Jim Cannon officiating. A celebration of her life will follow at the Sedro Woolley Eagles. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley. We are going ti miss her with all our hearts.Marilyn and the boys helped us learn the ropes and teach us the way of piloting when we got into the business.Getting together and having dinner and going over to the house and sittin down talkin and catchin up on all that was or was not goin on and trying to guess who might walk in the the door in the next little bit. She always had coffee on and when we did go over there she looked forward to seeing the kids and they loved the tar out of her they called her grandma Marilyn use to make her day. She was always there with arms open good bad or other wise nd would give you the shirt off her back if she thought you needed it.Our hearts hurt to loose such a special person but then warms knowing that now that special person is now our special angel.We love you and will forever miss you! Hard to see another old friend is gone. I worked at Portal with Marilyn, she was such a great lady and will be missed.

Such a marvelous woman! I first met Marilyn when I worked with her at Northern State Hospital (I was 19 and I believe she was near/around 40) and then we worked together many years later at Portal (I was 40 and she was ….)! Never lost contact in those in-between years, as well. She was always there for you no matter what.! Great sense of humor – which was even more acute when she and Betty Bussing got together! My oh my! Loved ’em both! Thank you, Marilyn, for just being you!

I am so sorry for all of you! For all of us.. she was truly a wonderful caring, loving, funny talented woman. I will always carry fond memories of “Aunt Hope”. Her door was always open and everyone was welcome. She cared about everyone and saw the good in people that sometimes others didn’t see. I loved her very much and will look forward to seeing her again someday. See you on Saturday …

Marilyn is one of the most amazing people I have ever known. I admire the love she had for her family and her friends (and Corky!!!), and how much she cared for us. She made it possible for my family to live comfortably and happily because she gave from her heart. I will miss her stories and advice (and pickles!!!). We love you, Marilyn!

I am sorry for your loss. My Grandma who has passed on (Violet Brooks) was one of Marilyn best friends they worked together at Northern State. I remember going to Marilyn and Roscoe home when I was a young girl with my grandma she would bring Roscoe home made jam..they all will be missed.

The passing of Marilyn and Betty Lou will forever leave a ‘hole’ in my life. Marilyn was a wonderful friend and I, too, loved her so very much. Lets hope that Roscoe and Marilyn & Betty and Frank are all happy to be together!
