Mary Mae Jane Smith Lockwood was born 5 May 1928 in Parsons, Kansas to Ernest Lorenzo (Leo) Smith and Elizabeth Margaret Heck.

She was born at home on a 640 acre farm, in a white 2 story farmhouse without electricity or running water. Her family raised oats, the wheat for their bread, livestock, vegetables and fruit that was preserved for each year. She has expressed many times how overjoyed she was at the birth of her baby brother, Ernest Jr., when she was 5 years old as she “finally had someone to play with”. She helped the family with all manner of farm life, caring for the animals, milking cows, making cheese and butter, canning, driving the tractor or whatever was needed to survive through the dust bowls and the Great Depression. She attended a one room schoolhouse through the 8th grade and was graduated from Erie High School in 1946. As a child she developed a love for animals that remained with her throughout her life. She was a stunningly beautiful Kansas farm girl.

 She met Harold John Lockwood in the restaurant of the Coffeyville, Kansas railway station in 1949. His first words to her were, “Where have you been all of my life?” He was tall, handsome, and his suit and tie the latest fashion. His easy manner and perfect teeth were the clinchers when she decided during that meeting that he would be the father of her children. He was from a large, old Baton Rouge family. They were married 4 February 1950 and remained together until Harold’s death on 16 August 1990.

 She is survived by her two children, John Gregory Lockwood and his wife Sheryl of Spokane, WA and Yvonne Theresa Lockwood of Fircrest, WA.; one grandson, Jeffery Scott Lockwood and his wife Heather of Spokane, WA.; brother, Ernest Smith Jr., his wife Dorothy and their four children, Jan, Sharon, Linda and Donna of Independence, Kansas.

 In the last year of her life she was assisted by her niece, Sharon Melander, who moved in with Mary to provide 24 hour companionship.  Prior to this, Mary was aided  by her dearest friend, Donna Marie Landis,who for many years provided love, care and assistance. The family would like to thank Eric Stark M.D. for his many years of excellent care and Mary’s many friends and neighbors for their support and friendship.

 Mary was a loving and devoted mother who never missed an opportunity to talk with or about her children, both of whom  loved her dearly. She will be missed by family and friends.

 Mary passed very peacefully at 5:15 pm ,14 December, 2013 with both of  her children and Donna Marie at her side. Mary will be laid to rest beside Harold in the Lockwood family plot at Roselawn Memorial Park in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Monday, May 5. 2014 at 11:00AM.
