Melvin James Case, 80, a longtime resident of Marblemount, passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley.
Melvin was born in Antioch, California on July 16, 1926, the son of Peter and Willow Duncan Case. He was raised and attended school in Antioch and later attended and graduated from Grants Pass High School in Grants Pass, OR.
While living in Grants Pass, in 1943 he became a partner in a portable sawmill where he operated a 36 inch inserted tooth power saw cutting rail road ties. Prior to entering the armed services he was employed at the Pioneer Rubber Mill Plant in Pittsburg, CA as a machine operator cutting transmission belts.
He enter the United States Army on October 12, 1944 WWII where he was in the 342nd Infantry as an electrician serving overseas in the Philippine Islands. He was also assigned to the 383rd during combat operations in the Asiatic Pacific theater. He participated in the Ryukyus Campaign and was part of the 96th Infantry Division, the ‘Deadeyes’ who played an important role in the war on the islands of Okinawa and the Philippines. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Purple Heart for being wounded during combat. He was Honorably Discharged with rank of Sergeant on December 13, 1946 from the 383rd Infantry 96th Division.
Melvin’s travels landed him in the small town of Marblemount, WA where his parents lived at that time. After a few years, Melvin, also known as ‘Jim’, bought his first home in Marblemount. This is also where he met our mom, Ruth Stafford, and they were married in April of 1949. He also worked in the logging industry as a truck driver and a millwright tech. He retired in the mid 1980’s and lived his life out in Marblemount. Our father and mother will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his 4 sons, Dale Case of Tonasket, Bill Case and his wife, Jane of Lynden, Melvin D. Case of Marblemount and Mike Case of Sedro-Woolley. 6 grandchildren, Angie, Aaron, Christy, Donna, Tyler and Nicole. 3 great-grandchildren, Austin, Jasmine and Tyssen. A brother, Gerald Case of Pittsburg, CA and a sister, Beverly Jones of Garden Valley, CA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth on December 7, 2005, a brother Marvin Case and a sister Mary Case.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at 2:00 PM at the Lyman Cemetery with Pastor Duane Stixrud of the Marblemount Chapel officiating and Military Honors by the George Baldridge Post #34, American Legion. Services and arrangements under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
