Norman C. Hornbeck

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Norman C. Hornbeck, age 79, a lifetime resident of Concrete and Birdsview, passed away on Monday, March 24, 2008 at Cross Creek Adult Family Home in Sedro-Woolley, WA with his family at his side.
He was born April 2, 1928 in Grassmere, Washington, the youngest of 7 children to Earl and Carrie Calkins Hornbeck.
Norman was married to Lottie Smith on April 8, 1948 in Concrete and they celebrated 58 years together until her passing in May of 2006. He enjoyed a long working career with many different jobs, but logging blood ran thick through his veins.
Norman enjoyed time with his family, watching any sporting events especially any event that his children or grandchildren were involved. Norman especially enjoyed his trips to state tournaments including a tournament in Casper, WY in the dead of winter. He also enjoyed dancing and always was the first person on the dance floor; and the many camping trips with Lottie over the years especially Baker Lake. His home was always a welcome place for everyone including an annual family barbeque which was open to the community. Besides his immediate family, his church family, logging family, and Cross Creek family were very important to him.
He was a former member of the Elks, a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, and an honorary member of the American Legion. Norm was a man of few words, but he always had a lot to say.
He is survived by his children; Dan Hornbeck and his wife Darlene of Wright, WY, Ruthann Smart and her husband Bob of West Seattle, Becki Hoover and her husband Les of Concrete, Kathie Davis and her husband Rob of Lynnwood, and a special daughter, Elena Harp and her husband Mark of Burlington. 10 grandchildren; Trenton Hornbeck and his fiancée Van Piper, Jessica Athey and her husband Ryan, Jon Hornbeck, Lacey Smart, Kimberly Smart, Karissa Sokol and her husband Brad, Brianna Jacobs and her husband Dane, Brandon Hoover, Stephanie Davis, and Melissa Davis. 2 great-grandchildren; Dylan Jacobs and Kaden Sokol. His brother, Leonard Hornbeck and his wife Katherine of Portland, OR and a sister, Annis Wilson of Bellingham. 3 brothers-in-law; John Smith and his wife Joyce of Mount Vernon, Larry Smith and his wife Ima of Soap Lake, and Bob Smith and his wife Elaine of Bellingham; his step-father-in-law, Ernie Locke of Victoria, BC and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lottie, 3 brothers; Rawson, Raymond, and Lawrence, a sister, Alta Scott and a granddaughter, Danielle Nicol Hornbeck.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Cross Creek Adult Family Home and Norm’s caregiver’s Bess and Neil, Lindsey, Dani, and Carol and to Skagit Hospice. Memorials are suggested to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
A Graveside Memorial Inurnment Service will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Forest Park Cemetery in Concrete. Pastor Marcus Stroud will be officiating. Arrangements and Services under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
