For many years Penny was self employed as an Avon Cosmetics sales associate, an occupation she loved partly due to the friends and relationships it brought to her over the years. She enjoyed relaxing with family and friends, playing darts, crocheting, quilting, reading, dancing or going to the casino. On March 17, 1983 she was united in marriage to Del Carlson in Sedro-Woolley and for the past 23 years they have made their home there.
