Phyllis R. Backstrom

Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

Phyllis R. Backstrom, 76, a resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2005 at the Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA.
She was born February 8, 1929 in Byers, Colorado.
Phyllis was a lifetime resident of Sedro-Woolley where she attended school and later graduating from Business School after two years of study.
She was married to Robert S. Backstrom in Sedro-Woolley in 1949. He preceded her in death in January of 1977.
Phyllis worked as a cook at the Sedro-Woolley High School from 1979-1992 and was known for her ability to use her own recipes in preparing meals for the students.
She enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, and working in her yard and garden. Phyllis was known for her ability to make delicious meals with very little to work with and for her pies at family reunions; everyone would eat dessert first. She also loved to spend time on the Skagit River at a special sand bar with her husband and family.
She is survived by her five sons, Robert L. Backstrom of Burlington, Ron Backstrom of Sedro-Woolley, Bud Backstrom and Annette of Burlington, Robin Backstrom and his wife, Tina of Clear Lake, and Kevin Backstrom of Sedro-Woolley. Five grandchildren, Ryan, Nichole, Eric, Bobby and Bryce. A sister-in-law, Lois Backstrom of Sedro-Woolley and numerous nieces and nephews.
The following poem was a favorite of Phyllis’ that she wanted to share.
God’s Garden
God looked around his garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon this Earth and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful. He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering, he knew that you were in paid,
he also knew in heaven you would never hurt again.
He saw the road was getting rough, and the hills harder to climb,
so he closed your weary eyelids, and whispered ‘peace be thine.’
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go
alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
If tears could build a staircase, and memories a lane, we’d walk all
the way to heaven and bring you home again.
