ROBERT D. HOPFIELD, SR., 83, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident, passed away at his home on Saturday November 12, 2005.
He was born on February 8, 1922 in Bellingham, Washington, the son of Frank & Marjorie Hoyt Hopfield.
Bob lived and attended school in many communities around Washington State until finally settling in Concrete where he graduated from high school in 1940.
He soon began working for Western Electric Telephone in Seattle.
He married Hazel Joy McGovern shortly before enlisting into the U.S. Army during WW II, spending much of his enlistment in Alaska working in telecommunications. After his discharge he returned to the Seattle area where he again worked for Western Electric Telephone, traveling all across the country installing telephone switchboards.
Bob married Dora E. Emily-Hoyt in 1962 and they made their home in Seattle until coming to Sedro-Woolley around 1973. She preceded him in death in 1992.
Bob enjoyed camping and growing vegetables in his garden.
He is survived by his 2 sons, Robert D. Hopfield, Jr. and his wife Linda of Sedro-Woolley and Richard ‘Warren’ Hopfield of Maltby, Washington and by his daughter, Karen Kayala of Anacortes. 2 step-daughters, Peggy Suryan Gus of Sedro-Woolley and Donna Strode of Bellingham. 11 grandchildren, Charlene Krueger Kurt, Kathy Quinn John, Robert D. Hopfield, III, Barbara Strode, Val Gates Randy, Lisa Thurier, Roger Carlson, Tracy Kaalla, Brenda Rindal Dave, Mark Suryan Rebecca and Beth Ann Piotto Peter; also 8 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife Dora he was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Jaclyn Piotto.
At his request there will be no funeral services. Private inurnment will be at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the Skagit County Meals on Wheels. Cremation arrangements under direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
