Roberta Fredlund Betschart Ostrom, age 76, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2007 at the Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA, surrounded by her loving family after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born January 6, 1931 in the house her grandfather built in Mount Vernon, the daughter of Skagit County pioneers, John and Esther Nelson Fredlund.
Roberta attended elementary school in Mount Vernon and moved to Saxon in the 2nd grade attending Acme Grade School and later graduated from Mt. Baker High School in 1949.
She married Bill Betschart on April 5, 1951 residing in Sedro-Woolley where they owned and operated Gateway Chevron. Together they had four children: Debbie, Marcy, Bob and Peggy. Bill preceded her in death in March of 1971.
Roberta married Don Ostrom on September 1, 1972 and together had a son, Ryan Ostrom. They owned and operated Don’s Minit Stop and Priced Less Sporting Goods in Sedro-Woolley. Roberta also worked for the US Postal Service as a mail carrier for 14 years as well as being the bookkeeper for the family businesses.
Roberta enjoyed her family and friends, fishing, playing cards, crossword puzzles, sewing, painting, football, especially the Seahawks, crabbing, clamming, camping, bowling, watching game shows, and planning school reunions. She was a charter member of the Wild Women of Woolley and a member of the Eagles, American Legion, Moose Club, and the Wildcat Steelhead Club.
She is survived by her husband Don of the family home in Sedro-Woolley and her children, Debbie Betschart Allen and her husband Donnie of Edison, Marcy Betschart Savage and her husband Jim of Lynnwood, Bob Betschart and his wife Karen of Portland, Peggy Betschart Massey and her companion, Mike Shelley of Burlington, and Ryan Ostrom and his wife, Shelia of Punkin Center. Grandchildren: Josh Allen, James Savage, Lauren and Kate Betschart, Jake, Nicole, Aaron Chance and Megan Massey, Baylee and Alden Ostrom, and twin great-granddaughters, Kendal and Kylin Chance. Two brothers: Al Fredlund and his wife, Janice of Burlington and Hal Fredlund and his wife, Corrine of Bellingham and a sister-in-law, Vivian Fredlund of Burlington. Numerous nieces, nephews and very close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Bill Betschart, her brother, John Gordon Fredlund and her sisters, Alfreda Sickler and her husband, Grant and Carol Kincl and her husband, Frank.
A private Graveside Service will be held at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery on Wednesday, February 14, 2007. A public Celebration of Life-Memorial Service will be held Thursday, February 15, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
