Shirley Ann Bates, 73, a resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away August 6, 2015 at the Cross Creek Adult Family Home.

Shirley was born on June 27, 1942 in Ellensburg, WA the third of four daughters to Eddie and Lydia (Rickensrud) Vergin. At an early age she moved to the upper Samish Valley of Skagit County with her mother & stepfather, Lydia & Ervin Redding, and three sisters. Shirley attended Samish Grade School, Central Grade School, Cascade Middle School, and graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School with the class of 1961.

Shirley married Don Bates on October 21, 1961 in Sedro-Woolley. They raised two children, Patricia and Don Jr. and resided in Sedro-Woolley.

Shirley enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She loved camping and she spent many years volunteering with Sedro-Woolley Little League.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Don Bates Sr.; her son, Don Bates Jr. and wife Robyn; granddaughter, Kendal Bates; her sisters, Delores Bowser and her husband Terry and Lucille Wood; her brother-in-law Bert Athearn and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia; paternal father, Eddie Vergin; mother & stepfather, Lydia and Ervin Redding; her sister, Arlene Athearn, and nephews Dennis and David Wood.

Remembrances may be made to the Scholarship Fund at Sedro-Woolley Eagles, FOE 2069 Axillary.

A small family gathering will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
