UPDATE:

At Carl’s explicit request his family will host an “Eatin’, Drinkin’ & Blue Grass Party” in celebration of his life.  Friends and family are invited to join them on June 15, 2013 at 5:00 pm at the Eagle’s Lodge in Sedro-Woolley for a potluck with bluegrass music to follow at 7:30 PM.  Bring your favorite dish to share, along with stories of Carl.

Carl Elmer Seidel, Jr. died peacefully at United General Hospital, in Sedro-Woolley.  He was born June 9, 1939 to Carl E. and Joyce A. (Fortune) Seidel, in Port Gamble, Washington.

He was raised in the Seattle area for many years before moving with his family to Big Lake, WA, attending school at Big Lake Elementary and Sedro-Woolley High School, graduating in 1957.  While still in high school, he enlisted in the US Navy, in which he retired in 1978.

In December, 1957, he married Deanna K. True, in Lyman, WA.  Together, they had three children, Carl “Sonny” III, Dianna and Christopher.  In 1974, he married Betty R. Newberry, who together had a son, Monty.

After retiring from the Navy, he worked as an auto mechanic, running his own shop, “Rainier Automotive” on Chuckanut Drive and later for Rallye Auto Sales in Sedro-Woolley.

He was a member and Past Master of United Lodge #93 Free and Accepted Masons of Washington, and an honorary member of Abbotsford Lodge #70, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of British Columbia.  He was a member of the Nile Shrine and enjoyed being in the parades with the Truckers.  He was also a member of the Cyrene Chapter Order of the Eastern Star.  He was very proud of his Masonic work.

Carl, in the past 15 years, was a “snowbird,” going to Tucson, AZ for wintering over with his 15 year companion, Nancy Lanphere, who very selflessly stayed by his side caring for him during his long and courageous journey fighting cancer.

Carl leaves behind his companion, Nancy; children, Carl E. “Sonny” Seidel III and his wife, Julie, Dianna R Cole and her husband, John, Chris L. Seidel and his wife, Rogene and Monty H. Seidel; stepsons, David Newberry and his wife, Cheryll and Dale Newberry and his wife, Jeannine; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Carl and Emma Seidel; mother, Joyce Seidel; wife, Betty Seidel and stepson, Denny Newberry.

Cremation arrangements are under the care of Lemley Chapel, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to be announced by Lemley Chapel, Facebook, and Dist. 9 Masonic website.  Memorial contributions may be made to Order of the Eastern Star, Cyrene Chapter, c/o Eileen Beitler, 10904 Carol Anne Court, Burlington, WA  98233.

When I first met Carl it was at my mother’s home in Antioch Californiap. I told my mother and Carl they were both crazy,as when I first met the guy I didn’tt care much for him .I guess that I thought I was protecting her from w hat? I had no idea. Then something happened, and I couldn”t help but became quite. Fond of his wired but some of the funniest s**t I ever saw,and not long after he moved to Washington I had to drag my own family to there home to visit not only my mom and brothers dale and Monty but also my step dad Carl E. Seidel, who I really felt more like a brother to than a father son relationship But I am thankfull to god that I got to know and to love the Carl I knew for just knowing this guy made me a better person for it.

Carl was a family friend. He and his wife Betty and their son Monty spent a lot of time camping with us. My favorite memory of Carl is from a camping trip we took to Baker Lake. My dad Wayne, Carl, Monty and me were fishing and Carl spotted a deer swimming across the lake and decided to “rescue” it. He got it in the boat and then it kicked the stuffing out of him. Eventually, he came to his senses and threw it back overboard. I think this was around 1979, maybe 1980. It was the scariest thing I ever witnessed on a fishing expedition–that deer was not happy to be “helped” by us and definitely wanted out of that boat. Years later, it was one of my dad’s funniest Carl stories to tell. I am sure glad that I got to know him. He was a good guy and he was always a good friend to our family. I like to think that he and my dad are up there in Heaven right now telling lies around a campfire, cracking open a cold beer and planning their next fishing trip.

I will always remember Carl’s funny – and inappropriate – jokes. He would either make me laugh, or groan out loud. He was a good man and he will be dearly missed. He took good care of Mom (Nancy) in the 15 years they were together. Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for his passing, but he is far away from the pain his illness gave him. He can now play disc golf in heaven with friends and family who have gone before him.

    To those who loved Carl,
May peace find it’s way into your hearts.. SWHS Class of 1957 will miss our dear
friend at all of our future picnics and parties. He was such a loyal participant and
brought many smiles and laughs to the occasions. He had an old story (told in
his way) about each one of us. We will miss him too and remember him with
    smiles.

We have known Carl since high school and have seen him through the years at all the class reunions and when he and Nancy would come by for visits. We were never bored when Carl was around. He had lots of stories to tell. We are really sorry for your loss but know that he is no longer suffering from that horrible disease. He always talked about his family and how proud he was of you. Nancy, we send you our prayers, too. You were always so sweet to him. God bless all of you.

    Hugs,

I will never forget all the time that Carl spent working at my dad’s dealership. He always had a way of making his presence know, in his own funny way. Carl was like family to all of us at Rallye Auto. We enjoyed his visits when he was home from Arizona and appreciated the fact that he always made the time to stop by. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the family. May God comfort each of you during this time. Your dad’s life will always be a special memory to me.
