Anne Verdoes

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Anne Verdoes, age 98,  of  Mount Vernon passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, November 4, 2010.   She was born in Sassenheim, The Netherlands to Pieter and Hitje (Bakker) Meijer, the 5th of 10 children.

Anne became a preschool teacher until she joined two of her sisters in formal nurses training in Alkmaar, The Netherlands.  She worked as a  nurse  until she  married  Abraham Johannes Verdoes on June 18, 1942 in Sassenheim.

They immigrated to the United States in 1947 with two children, settling in Bellflower, CA and surrounding towns where four additional children were born.  Abe and Anne were proud to become American citizens at their earliest opportunity and in 1958 the family settled in Western Washington where  Anne  assisted on the family dairy farm in different capacities.  She was involved with the Skagit County Dairy Women as well as the women’s Bible Study Group in her church.  Anne was a life long member of the Christian Reformed Church.

Anne’s sense of humor and good nature will be remembered by friends and family alike.  Walking was one of Anne’s favorite pastimes as well as singing and reading.

Mom was an accomplished international traveler.  Africa, Western Europe, Russia, and New Zealand were some of the places Anne visited.  From riding a camel in Morocco, to cruising the Volga River in Russia, landing on the ice glaciers in New Zealand, she came home with ideas for her next adventure.  Winters were often spent in Arizona, Florida, and South Carolina resulting in fun filled driving trips with her friends.   Mom/Oma counted her blessings until the end of her life.

Anne was preceded in death by her husband Abraham, her son Dick,  her parents and 8 of her 10 siblings.  She is survived by her daughter, Cora Verdoes of Mount Vernon,   son, John Verdoes  (Beth) of Tel Aviv,   daughter, Henrietta Schmidt (Jon) of Sedro-Woolley,  son, Joe Verdoes (Arlene) of Anacortes, and  son, Martin Verdoes of Mount Vernon.  14 grandchildren, John Kalt, Annette Kalt-Lucas, Derick Kalt, Joel Kalt, Amelia Verdoes, Bram Verdoes, Alan Petter, Angie Petter-Beech, Peter Verdoes, Benjamin Verdoes, Dorshell Verdoes,  Marshall Verdoes, Robert Verdoes, and Nicholas Verdoes.  6 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.  Her sister, Henny Van Zon of South Africa and numerous  nieces and nephews in California, Canada, Holland, and South Africa.

The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Johnson, Ann, Lynn, Nati, Berti, Wilma, and Jeanne for their special care.  Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Northwest 819 S. 13th Mount Vernon, WA 98273.

Private Family Interment Services will be held at Hawthorne Memorial Park in Mount Vernon with a Celebration of Life Memorial Service to be held Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at 1:00PM at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley with Pastor John Knoester of the Christian Reformed Church officiating.  A reception will follow the services at the Chapel.    Please share your memories of Anne and sign the online guestbook at www.lemleychapel.com.   To view a live broadcast of the service on the internet; go to www.lemleychapel.com, go to obituary and click on view broadcast.

My oma will be deeply missed by all who knew her. I learned so much from her and I will pass this knowledge to my son. I can only hope to be half as wise as she was.
