Calvin Arthur Cole

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Calvin Arthur Cole, age 82, a lifelong resident of the Sedro-Woolley area, passed away July 20, 2011, at Skagit Valley Hospital.

Cal was born December 22, 1928, to Leon and Dollie (Murphy) Cole, in Sedro-Woolley.  He was raised and attended schools in Sedro-Woolley, graduating from Sedro-Woolley High School in 1947, and continued on to Skagit Valley College, where he met his future wife, Diane.  Cal was in the US Army from 1951 to 1952, stationed in Texas as a Private First Class.

He and Diane Moors were married at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, on June 25, 1955.

After working for Skagit Steel, Cal started his own business, Calbuilt Products, Inc., which he ran for 27 years.  He built the grandstands at Burlington High School, Nooksack Valley High School, and the college in Bremerton.  He retired from his business in 1991.

He built many homes in his life for his family and others, and was currently living in the dream home he built for Diane and himself, which overlooks the valley, from Mount Baker to the bay.

Cal and Diane enjoyed SWHS Wrestling, and in 1978, they wanted to show more appreciation, so they began handing out gold pins to those wrestlers who pinned opponents, for many years, until Cal’s health began failing.  Cal and Diane felt the wrestlers were family, and got great joy following them to matches, especially to State.

Cal loved his wife, kids, grandkids and great grandkids, and would do anything for them.

He is survived by his wife Diane, of the family home; daughters Debbie and husband Mike Brampton, of Lake Stevens, and Dena and husband Jon Fleurichamp, of Sedro-Woolley; sons, Cory Cole, of Friday Harbor, and Craig Cole, of Sedro-Woolley; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Cole, of Burlington; grandchildren, David, Jaymi and Kristin Brampton, Riley Fleurchamp, Steven and his wife, Noel Cole, Megan and Matthew Cole, and Aspen Cole; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Bill Cole, of Sedro-Woolley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cal was preceded in death by his parents, step-parents, 4 brothers, Lloyd, Gilbert, Don and Russal Cole, 3 sisters, Rita Cole, Carlie Slattery and Leona Smith.

Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Community Services, or a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank North Cascade Cardiology, in Bellingham, for the excellent care given to Cal.

A family graveside service was held at Union Cemetery with military honors.

This will be the first holiday season without my grandpa. I can’t even imagine how hard this is going to be. I want you to know that I think of you everyday. I think back on the memories I have and there is nothing but fondness. I hope you can hear my prayers to you. I love you and miss you. I look forward to seeing you again in Heaven. Thank you for all your love.

We always enjoyed Cal when he and Diane camped with our family in Twisp. He was always so friendly and happy. I’m sure he will have some good conversations and recollections with my Dad up in heaven. All our sympathy to Diane and family.

    Diane:
Was so very sad when I read today’s paper and saw that Cal had passed away. Dave always respected and enjoyed Cal so much as a friend and someone who could provide “building” information. His presence in SWHS gym on wrestling nights will especially be missed, you both were such great supporters of the team. I will remember you in my prayers and may the Lord be with you now and in the days to come.
    Your friend,
    Kacy Johnson

Cal was a kind and caring sole. Over my years working in the athletic department at SWHS Cal & Diane were a mainstay. He will be greatly missed. My love and prayers go out to Diane and the family.

  • Norma Plummer Johnson

Chad and I will remember many good times together at reunions. We will miss him.

  • Kristin Brampton

I think of myself as a very lucky person to have called this man my grandpa. He was an amazing man and I will hold him in my heart forever. It’s harder than I could have ever imagined knowing I won’t see him again on earth, but I know he’s happy from his beautiful view in Heaven looking down on everyone he loved. I always thought that my grandparents had the best relationship. They always showed each other love until the final moments of his life. I’ll always tell my kids stories about him so they remember him like I will. Thank you for being the best grandpa I could have ever asked for! I love you so much and will miss you everday! <3

  • Mike Brampton & family

Calvin Cole was a great man. He welcomed me into his familyback in 1980. Debbie and our 3 kids David, Jaymi and Kristin loved him and will miss him every day. Our grand kids and part of his great grand kids Riley, Taya and Maylee also already miss him. I lost my dad in 1984 and I felt Cal was also a father to me. Cal loved his family and it showed. Everything he did was for his family. His love for Diane was always displayed. His dream home that he built for his wife was and still is a remarkable feat of design and beauty. The mountain top view from Cedar Ridge is one of the most beautiful in Skagit County. Cal you are a remarkable man. We will always remember and hold you in our hearts. Love you Mike, Debbie, David, Jaymi, Kristin, Steven, Riley, Taya, Maylee. See you in Heaven

  • Clara May & Gordon Hooper

I have known Cal since he first started dating Diane. They were part of our extended family for many years. We enjoyed seeing Diane and Cal at wrestling matches, expecially at State where Gordon and Bob were their “runners”. Cal was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed. My prayers go out to you, Diane. If we can help with anything, please don’t hesitate to call. We love you.
