Calvin C. Self, 87, a longtime Hamilton area resident, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2012 at the Birchview Memory Care facility in Sedro-Woolley.
He was born on March 18, 1924 in Wolf Creek, Tennessee, the second of thirteen children of Hilliard & Lillie Mae (Presnell) Self. He was raised and attended school in Wolf Creek until the age of 10, when during the depression he went to work to help support his family.
In his late teens Calvin began working in the woods as a tree faller in Tennessee. He came to Skagit County in 1946 and secured a logging job, he then returned to Tennessee and married the love of his life, Faye Hicks in Rominger, North Carolina on January 18, 1947. Shortly thereafter they moved to Skagit County and Calvin continued to work as a tree faller for Scott Paper, Cunningham Logging and Van De Grift Logging until his retirement. After retirement he raised cattle on the family farm, spent more time with his family, helping at his church and continued to go fishing, hunting and trapping. He and Faye were charter members of the Hamilton First Baptist Church and he served as a Deacon for many years.
Calvin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Faye, at the family home near Hamilton. His daughters, Shirley Fox and husband Steve of Sedro-Woolley, Joyce Summitt and husband Thomas of Belfair, WA and Vickie Frizzell and husband Gary of Sedro-Woolley, and son, Johnie Self and wife Karen of Shelton, WA; Six brothers, Homer Self (Ovella), David Self (Leona), Luther Self (Sharon), Lewis Self and Cecil Self (Judy) all of Sedro-Woolley and Jesse Self (Wanda) of Redmond, WA and two sisters, Ruth Osbon of Harrisburg, Arkansas and Lillie Fritz (Paul) of Sedro-Woolley. We were so sorry to here the news of Calvin’s passing. On the brighter side, He is now where His Faith has become sight. Words cannot describe how much Calvin and his family mean to the Brooks Family. For a such a short time in getting to know Calvin he made the greatest impact on me as anyone could. He was my friend. We moved away from Washington in 1972 but we have never ceased to miss Calvin and the whole family. We had so many memories, worshipping at church, family dinners, singing with the family and so much more. One time over at his house at Sunday dinner I took to my plate a piece of back from some chicken Fay had fixed. He said “Wayne do you know what they call that on the end of that back?” I said “no, what?” He said “Its the tooter, thats what the chicken goes toot toot with.” and just laughed and laughed. He had a great laugh. After that he would just look at me and go toot toot and I knew what he meant. Our prayers do not cease for you Faye and family. We Love you all.
