My deepest sympathy to the Mathis family. Candler was a valued dedicated hard working dependable employee with my company H&O Logging Co. for over 20 years. Candler was also a personal friend. I’d like to share a few stories with you. Back in the 60’s we bought a Forest Service timber sale with over 10 million board feet at Fish Creek. I asked Candler what type of saws to buy. He suggested we buy 5 #1070 Homelite power saws with 50 ” bars. Candler and his cutting crew did an excellent job on that sale and on every other sale we bought.
In 1964 & again in 1965 Bob Hinton and I took our employees on a Moose hunting trip to Valley View Alberta Canada. 12 crew members went the first year and we got 12 moose, 11 went the second trip and we got 11 moose. Candler laid out all the hunting plans for us on both trips. Candler was a leader in his private life and his working life. He was a good one and I will miss him.
    God Bless him. Fred Ossewarde

I remember the first time I spoke to Candler. I was in North Carolina and he was in Washington. He called me to talk about my moving to Hamilton to serve as Pastor of the Hamilton Baptist Church. I remember in the conversation Candler said he had his ticket to heaven. That ticket was and is Jesus Christ. The years spent at Hamilton were a learning time for me and I am eternally grateful for the friendship, brotherhood and fellowship of Candler Mathis. He loved his Lord, family, church and Pastor. He was a true friend and encourager. When Zoe told me he had died I thought of this passage from the book of Revelation. “And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.” Rev. 14:13

I was deeply saddened by Chandlers passing he was my friend of many years. We shared roots in North Carolina and a strong belief in salvation through Jesus Christ our lord. Candler was a quiet gentle man that in spite of what life handed him his faith never wavered. He loved God his family and his country and proved it every day of his life. He was a hard worker and always willing to give a hand to anyone that needed it. He will leave behind a legacy of love a fitting tribute for a man that asked little for himself but gave freely to others. R.I.P. by friend. Prayers to the family during this difficult time but he is in a much better place.
