Darlene Phyllis Sam, Sr., 77, an Upper Skagit Tribe member, passed away at her home on in Sedro-Woolley surrounded by her family on August 6, 2019.

She was born on April 3, 1942 in Tulalip, Washington, the daughter of Donald & Katherine (Phare) Damien, Sr.  She was raised and attended school at the Swinomish community and in Bellingham.

On January 3, 1961 she was united in marriage to Harlan Sam, Sr., making their home in Mount Vernon until settling in Sedro-Woolley in 1972.

Darlene was a devoted wife and mother, and worked as a commercial fisherwoman.           She was a member of Seowyn and of the 1910 Indian Shaker Church.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, stick games and bingo.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harlan Sam, Sr of Sedro-Woolley; her children, Laura Sam and her companion Rome Carlson of Sedro-Woolley, Elaine Neideffer and husband Mark of Livermore, CA, Darlene Sam, Jr., Harlan Sam, Jr., Fox Sam, Sr., Barbara Bailey and Bonnie George all of Sedro-Woolley; her sister, Marie Ballew of Lummi, WA; 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, one Godson, Timmy Edwards and numerous nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents Donald and Katherine; brother, Donald Damien, Jr.; sister, Delores Harry and her twin brothers, Fredrick and Joseph Jack and numerous extended family members.

Prayer Services will be held on Friday August 9, 2019 at 7:00 pm followed by Funeral Services on Saturday August 10, 2019 at 10:00 am at the Upper Skagit Indian Gymnasium. Interment will follow at the Hamilton Indian Cemetery.
