Doris Jeannette Allen passed away at her home in Sedro-Woolley on her birthday, April 9, 2016. She was 103 years of age.
Doris was achaten-suisse.com born on April 9, 1913 in Sterling, Washington, just west of Sedro-Woolley, the daughter of Whetzel & Florence (Miller) Dreyer. She was raised and attended school in Sedro-Woolley, graduating valedictorian of her class in 1930.
On June 10, 1933, she was united in marriage to Dutee Allen and they made their first home in Port Angeles, Washington, later moving back to the valley.
Dutee passed away in 1951 and she became a working mom. One of her first jobs was as a cook at the Memorial Hospital in Sedro-Woolley (now State Street High School). She took night classes to gain office skills and worked for the U.S. Civil Service at Pier 91 for many years before returning to Sedro-Woolley.
In retirement she found much satisfaction volunteering at United General Hospital’s gift shop (29 years). Besides volunteering at the gift shop, she made many of the handmade items she sold, ie. baby blankets, sweater sets, embroidered pillowcases and numerous handmade tree ornaments at Christmas time. For family members she made numerous afghans, doilies and other handcrafted items.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Eileen Beitler and husband John; daughter-in-law, Lorene Allen, all of Burlington; grandchildren, Terry & Lisa Beitler, of Burlington, Gerry (Rusty) and Shawn Becker of Springfield, OR; Mike Allen, of Arlington, TX and Cindy Lou Allen of Burlington; also several great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dutee, son, Floyd Allen, a granddaughter, Peggy Beitler Terrell, and brother & sister-in-law, Harry & Margie Dreyer.

    I worked with Doris for many years at United General Hospital. She was always cheerful and helpful. She was a devoted volunteer who always went above and beyond. Her years in the gift shop brightened many, visitors and staff. She will be remembered for her smiles and devotion to the hospital.
