Douglas Smith

Sunday, July 6th, 2014

Douglas Lurelle Smith, 83, a longtime resident of Concrete passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Life Care Center in Sedro-Woolley, WA.

He was born on June 8, 1931 in Rising City, Nebraska the son of Hubert and Wilhemina “Sadie” (Winkelman) Smith. Doug  grew up in Southwest WA and graduated from Evergreen High School in Vancouver WA June 2, 1949.   Doug served his country in military service from 1951-1954; during the Korean War then transferred to the reserves from 1954-1959 and was honorably discharged in 1959.

Doug moved to the Skagit valley in 1994 when secured a job with Washington State Fisheries Dept. at Baker Lake.  Doug loved nature, and spent most of his free hours hunting or observing the great outdoors which surrounded him.  As a young man he had been fascinated by wild birds and could describe in detail the habits of almost every bird of prey simply from memory.  Doug was an avid reader and loved to tell the many stories of his life and the things he had observed in nature.

Doug found a church family at Concrete Assembly of God and became a faithful part of the church soon after he arrived.  Though much of a “loner” all his life, Doug found lasting friendships there these last twenty years.  Doug will be missed by all who knew him best; for his sense of humor and the sound of his laughter.

Doug was proceeded in death by his parents Hubert and Sadie Smith and daughter of one and a half years Candice Colene Smith.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2 , 2014 at 11:00 AM at Concrete Assembly of God, 45734 Main Street in Concrete, WA with Pastor Bruce Martin officiating.
