G. Martin Hodgin, 83, a longtime resident of Hamilton, Washington, and seasonal resident of the Twisp community, passed away on Sunday, April 17, 2011 at United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley, Washington.

He was born on June 11, 1927 in Franklin, North Carolina, the son of Charles Dee & Irene (Ledford) Hodgin.

In 1933 the Hodgin family moved to Hamilton where Martin was raised and attended grade school.  He graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School with the class of 1946.   He then joined the U.S. Army where he served his country towards the end of WW II.    After his discharge in 1948 he returned to the Skagit Valley, beginning a long career in the timber industry.  Martin was a packer for the U.S. Forest Service; he worked as a choker setter and a truck driver for L.G. Cunningham Logging for several years; he also worked as an operator in the log yard for Boyd Lumber & Sedro-Woolley Lumber until his retirement in 1991.

On February 11, 1950 Martin was united in marriage to Marie Lanktree in Langley, Washington and for over 60 years they have made their home together in Hamilton where they raised their children, horses and cattle on their farm.

Martin was an avid horseman and a longtime member of the Skagit County Back Country Horsemen; a longtime member of the Central United Methodist Church in Sedro-Woolley, a member of the American Legion in Concrete and the Eagles in Twisp.

Martin is survived by his wife, Marie, at the family home in Hamilton.  Three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles & Mildred of Sedro-Woolley, Michael & Janet of Bellingham and David & Colleen of Chimacum. Five granddaughters, Valerie Martin, Anna Kominak, Amy Crandall and Emily and Elizabeth Hodgin.  Eight great-grandchildren, Ryan, Josh, Syann, Clancy, David, Grace-Ann, Adria & River. His brother-in-law, Michael Lanktree and his wife Phillis and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dee & Irene, an infant sister, Mary and his sister and brother-in-law, June & Duwayne Anderson.

Graveside Inurnment Services will be held at the Hamilton Cemetery on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Marilyn Kallshian officiating.  A fellowship will follow services at the Central United Methodist Church in Sedro-Woolley.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of the Northwest or to a charity of your choice.  Arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

I miss you all the time. I wish you could see River and Adria- they are really fantastic you would be so proud. No one loves beans more than Adria and she already adores horses and has dreams of being a vet. River is never ceasing (much like an actual river) he is an amazing little helper and dreams of planting his own garden. For now he is a little too much help sometimes for Grammie and Pappy with theirs (and one heck of a bean picker). Give Cathy a big hug for me up there.

To all the Hodgin family, we were so sorry to hear about Martin. Words are never enough at a time like this. He will be greatly missed. I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act of our lives, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our hearts and memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having known them and shared their love. To live in hearts of those we leave behind, is not to die. Just a change of adderss. May God Bless and keep all of you.

I am pleased to know your family was with you when you passed. We were with Mom, and it was very hard but important. You can be reunited with her now. I am happy we had a chance to speak last summer, you were always very special to me – you will be missed. My love and sympathy goes out to our family members! Love you all.

  • Judy Bell

I am writing this note for all of the Ralph Bell family members. Our hearts were sad when Jeff called with the news of Martin’s death. We left Hamilton in 1970, but we never lost the love and memories that we had for the small town in Skagit Valley and our friends there. I always loved the horses and Martin would usually give me a little ride. I was such a big deal for me! I felt like I was riding high. I had a nice visit with Martin and Marie in one of my last visits west. We had a good time sitting on the porch and talking about memories. Memeories are so wonderful and we are glad to have Marting in them. Martin is in a wonderful place. We will see him again. There is now another cowboy in heaven.

    Marie and Family,

So sorry to hear of Martin’s going to meet his heavenly maker and the ones gone over before him, in the place of no sorrow and suffering to greet others that have gone on before. He is probably resting in the arms of Jesus right now. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your friends at this time. God Bless at this Easter time! He is risen.

Marie and family: Even though we knew Martin a short few years, we grew to love him as a good neighbor here in the Methow Valley. We will miss his many stories about the Methow and his haying efforts in Hamilton every year. We will miss him dearly. He is probably in heaven right now telling some of his stories. What a good man! Take care Martin. Judy and I will watch your place over here. We hope to see you soon here in the Methow Marie. Please don’t be a stranger. We love you also. Mike and Judy Hanley, Twisp, WA.

    Dear Marie and all family,
I was so saddened to read of Martin’s death, and feel great regret that I have not been in closer touch. Martin and Marie and boys are always in the childhood piece of my heart. I remember the gentle kindness, tolerance and laughter. I feel a bit like a cornerstone of my younger years has just departed. I am sure he will be greatly missed by all of you, and I send my prayers for your strength and peace. For what it is worth, he has left the Valley as it in standing by in its greatest beauty, like an honor guard… buds, tulips, daffodils, a little sun, a full river, green grass, and a cap of snow still on the hills. Good bye to a good man. Lovingly, DeAnna Claus

We are going to truly miss seeing Martin at the trailhead we always enjoyed visiting with him hearing his stories and of course making us laugh until we cry.
He was a true character we are sure going to miss him but will forever carry his memory in our hearts along with his humor and stories.

Martin, no other way to say it other than the fact you will be missed a whole bunch. You lead a family that had a large part in many lives in our community, and that included ours. To the rest of the family, we are here for you, we will also pray for everyone during this time of loss. Think of how much fun he is having pulling everyones leg up there now. Looking forward to visiting again someday Martin….

A nicer man would be hard to find. My parents treasured their visits with Martin and Marie at Twisp, the rodeo. the peacefulness, the talk, and the beans. Now they are listening to that voice telling his stories again. Happy times, may he rest in peace.

I am going to miss your hugs the most Dad and your willingness to love me and our family and all our critters. Thank you for all the encouragement all the advice (even if I didn’t always take it you risked telling me more.) Because you loved us all more than your self. It would be impossible to fill your boots and the foot prints they have left on all our lives. Because the prints went so deep in the places of our hearts. Thanks for being my Dad and father in-law. and grandpa to our kids and grandkids. I could not have picked better… I would never have needed to. Tell everyone there “hello” I am sure you have. Love Colleen

Just something I wanted to add: Dad passed away Sunday morning about 7:40. He was surrounded by family. He didn’t struggle or appear to be in any pain his breathes on earth simply slowed as he began claiming breathes from heaven. It was hard to see him go, but thankful to God that He prepared a place for Dad to go.
