Gail Evan Kenney

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

Gail Evan Kenney, age 88, was born in Sumas, Washington on November 16, 1921 to L.V. and Lois (Kelly) Kenney.  He passed away, Wednesday, March 17, 2010 from complications of diabetes while residing at Mira Vista Care Center in Mount Vernon, Washington.

His early years were spent growing up on the Sumas Prairie near Abbotsford, B.C.  Gail fell in love with the automobile early on.  He apprenticed as a mechanic with his uncle.

Gail met his future wife, Mabel, a nurses aide and his sister’s roommate at Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Woolley.  They were married on May 2, 1943 in Sedro-Woolley.  During WWII, Gail worked at the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station in Keyport, WA until he was drafted in the U.S. Army Air Corp.

After the war, Gail and Mabel made their home in several locations including Sequim and Sedro-Woolley until settling in Marysville in 1956.  While in Marysville, Gail was a share-holder in Everett Plywood and Door.  When the plywood industry failed he went to work for Boeing in Everett.  When that failed, he and Mabel purchased a produce market in Marysville where for 14 years they operated Kenney’s Market selling fruits and vegetables.

After their retirement, they spent some of their best years R-Ving, eventually settling in Moses Lake.  After residing there for 9 years, they returned to Sedro-Woolley in 2000 to be closer to their family.

Gail never lost his love of tinkering with cars.  He also built a boat and a camper that looked very professional.  He loved his cats and took pride in the accomplishments of his granddaughters.

Gail was predeceased by his wife Mabel of 62 years in 2005, his sister, Maxine Dickgieser, and his parents L.V. and Lois Kenney.

He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Kenney and her husband James Johnson of Sedro-Woolley and daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Joel Yackley of Rochester, WA.  Two brothers, Bruce Kenney and his wife Marion of Conway, WA and Jerrett Kenney and his wife Lila of Bellingham, WA.  He is also survived by four granddaughters, five great grandchildren, a  step-grandson and daughter and two nephews and their families.

Memorials are suggested to the Skagit County Meals-on-Wheels or the SKAT Dial-a-Ride.   The family wishes to thank the care givers at Mira Vista and Joshua’s House for their patience and care.

Graveside Services will be held Monday, March 22, 2010 at 2:00PM at the Saxon Cemetery near Acme with Pastor Richard Coursen of the First Baptist Church of Sedro-Woolley officiating with Military Honors to follow by the Army National Guard.  Arrangements and Services under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
