George Handy, age 83, born August 27, 1925 in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, son of William L. and Mabel Belles Handy, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley, Washington.
George attended Sedro-Woolley High School and graduated with the class of 1943. He joined the Marines in January of 1944 serving in the Pacific and was honorably discharged in August of 1946. George was united in marriage to Juanita Knight on March 17, 1950 and in 1951 they had a daughter, Patricia.
George was a house mover for Fred Howell in Sedro-Woolley and he later became a heavy equipment operator working many years for Snelson Co. retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local #302, VFW, and the American Legion.
On May 4, 1968, George married Carol Betts Handy and they made their home in Clear Lake until moving to Sedro-Woolley in 1997.
George is survived by his wife Carol of 41 years at the family home in Sedro-Woolley. Two daughters; Patricia Fant of Sedro-Woolley and Sharon Fox and her husband Bruce of Everett. Two sons; Richard Handy and Thomas Handy and his wife Ina all of Sedro-Woolley. Three brothers; William Howard Handy and his wife Clarissa, Kenneth Handy and his wife Dorothy, and Robert Handy and his wife Burnette all of Sedro-Woolley. A sister-in-law; Virginia Handy of Sedro-Woolley and a brother-in-law; Raymond Eaton of Sedro-Woolley. Three grandchildren; Lynn Potts and her husband Brian of Prince George BC, April Johnson of Mount Vernon, and Crystal Black of Kent. Six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Michael, two brothers, Allen and Richard Handy and a sister, Barbara Eaton.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at United General Hospital for the special care given to George.
Funeral Services will be Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 2:00PM at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Jim Cannon of Sedro-Woolley officiating with interment to follow with Military Honors at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery. A fellowship will follow the services to share memories of George at the American Legion Hall at the corner of Puget and Ferry Sts.
