GLADYS I. QUEEN, 91, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident, passed away Friday March 14, 2003 at the Mira Vista Care Center in Mount Vernon.
She was born on September 27, 1911 in Willetts, North Carolina, one of nine children of Hanley & Parlee Dills Gunter. She was raised and attended school near Sylva, North Carolina. Gladys was united in marriage to Grady Queen on July 2, 1934 in Georgia and they made their home near Sylva. In late 1937 Grady came to Skagit County in search of work in the woods, with Gladys coming in early 1938. Together they made their home in Sedro-Woolley for 53 years until Grady’s death in 1991. Gladys was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed tending to her home and working in her garden. She also raised and tended wildlife; turkeys, opossums, pigs, cows and other farm animals and children from the neighboring schools would come to her home on field trips to enjoy and learn about the animals.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Hauenstein and her son and daughter-in-law, Ron & Judy Queen, all of Sedro-Woolley. 3 grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff & Terry Hauenstein of Concrete, Sheri & Randy Hudson of Sedro-Woolley and Ryan & Kim Queen of Marysville. 4 great-grandchildren, Jeffery & Jason Hauenstein and Matthew & Meghan Hudson.
1 sister, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Grady, a grandson Greg Hauenstein, a son-in-law, Lyle Hauenstein, 2 brothers and 5 sisters.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday March 19, 2003 at 2:00 PM at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley. Pastor Bill Heberling of the Bow Church of Christ will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery. Arrangements under direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
