Glaydell Cook

Glaydell Cook

Monday, January 9th, 2017

Glaydell Cook, 88, a longtime Skagit County resident, passed away on January 9, 2017 at Prestige Care in Burlington, WA.

She was born on January 4, 1929 in Caney Fork, NC, one of 12 children of Johnnie & Gertie (Shuler) Mathis.  Glaydell was raised and attained her education in North Carolina.

In the spring of 1955 she moved to Skagit County; on July 22 1955 she was united in marriage to Baxter Cook in Lyman and together they made their home and raised their family in Hamilton.  Baxter passed away unexpectedly in 1970.

Glaydell worked seasonally for the Sakuma and Nagatani families in the berry fields for a while, but for the most part was a devoted wife and mother and a doting grandmother to her family.  She was very active in the churches she attended, the Hamilton & Lyman Baptist Churches and the Valley Baptist Church in Sedro-Woolley.  She also enjoyed sewing and quilting; growing vegetables in her garden; cooking, canning and baking and traveling back to North Carolina to visit family.

Glaydell is survived by her daughter, Gennie Petersen and her husband Tim of Sedro-Woolley and her son, Timothy Cook of Bellingham; her beloved grandsons, Kyle Petersen and wife Katie, and Kody Petersen and wife Nicholle; her great-grandchildren, Kaplen & Kenzey Petersen; 7 brothers, Grady Mathis of Winthrop, WA, and Newman, L.C., Dale, Everett and twins, Larry & David Mathis all of North Carolina; her sister, Evelyn Prince of North Carolina and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Candler, Elmer and Eugene Mathis; a nephew Daryl Mathis and infant niece, Susan Mathis.

The family requests memorials be made to the Valley Baptist Church building fund in honor of Glaydell.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Valley Baptist Church in Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Harold Thornbrough officiating.  Interment will follow at the Lyman Cemetery. Visitation available at and services under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.  Please share memories of Glaydell and sign the online guest register.

Glaydell, You have been a dear and special friend for many years and I thank God for our friendship. You have always had a special place in my heart. You were an inspiration and an encouragement to me and we made some great memories together. I love the way you loved Jesus, I love the way you loved your family and I loved the way you loved me. I will miss you dearly but we will have a great reunion and maybe soon. You will always be my forever friend. Until we meet again.

Ms. Glaydell was the sweetest, most kindhearted, and caring person anyone could ever hope to meet. I was blessed to know her my entire life and thought of her as another Mamaw. I’m so thankful that my daughters had many years with Ms. Glaydell. We live across the fence from each other in what she would call the “Hollar” (meaning down in the valley a ways). My Grandparents used to live in my house (Fremont and Joan Buchanan). I remember when I was young and someone would say, “Sis, go pick Glaydell’s beans and take em’ to her!” We still got the Sylva Herald for a long time and shared it with her. She loved to talk about Caney Fork and the rest of the mountain including Moses Creek where my Poppy was from. I’ve been there several times so I could listen to her stories all day. They were fascinating and full of history and people. I’ll never forget her soft spoken voice or that she never drove a car as long as I remember! She adopted Poppy’s cat Sam or Sam adopted her immediately after he passed away. They were the perfect pair. Sam had never liked anyone before. But he loved her. I miss her so much. Our families thoughts and prayers are with Genie and her entire family during this time of great sorrow and loss.

Dear family, so sorry to hear of the passing of such a precious lady, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. I went to school with Tim Cook until I moved in 7th Grade, and I also attended a lot of church functions at the Lyman Baptist Church with Gennie, all of these people were a special part of my early growing up days.

May God comfort you in the weeks to come.
