Hope Martin

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Hope Martin, age 91, passed away at her home in Burlington on Wednesday, July 6, 2011.

Hope was born on October 12, 1919, in Port Angeles, Washington, to Arthur and Florence (Ames) Hassell, and was raised in Port Angeles from the age of 9 by Don and Lela Taggart.

From 1938 to 1943 she lived in Seward and Ketchikan, Alaska, where she and Harry Martin were married in 1939 while Harry was in the Coast Guard.  They settled in Rockport, WA at the Martin Ranch in 1944, moving to Marblemount in 1951, milling the wood to build their house.  Hope moved to Sedro-Woolley in 1985.

She worked at The Log House Inn 15 years, co-owned and operated Martin Brothers Logging Co. for 40 years with her husband and Jay Martin, and co-owned the Totem Trail Restaurant and Lounge in Rockport for 6 years.

She was a member of Marblemount Community Club Association, Marblemount PTA, Marblemount Orthopedic Association and was a leader for 4H, Cub Scouts, and Campfire Girls.  She enjoyed cooking, growing flowers and fostering anyone who needed help, caregiving or a good meal.  Even after retiring, Hope went to Dillon, Montana with her granddaughter to help run the Stage Coach Inn Hunting Lodge for 3 years.

Hope is survived by her 2 sons, Rody Martin and his wife Vicki and Randy Martin and wife Debbie all of Marblemount; 2 daughters, Ronda Martin and her boyfriend Alan Hogan of Snohomish and Roxy Larson and her husband Richard, of Burlington; 2 sisters, Florence Swanson and Harriett McEwan and husband Jack all of Port Angeles; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 5 brothers.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Skagit Valley Emergency and Hospital, Skagit Valley Hospice Care and especially to Hope’s wonderful caregivers, Martina and Debbie.  Mom loved you like one of her own.

A Celebration of Life Pot Luck will begin at noon, on Saturday, July 16, 2011, at her home, 20065 Gina Marie Lane, Burlington, and make sure to wear purple.  Cremation arrangements are under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

I am sorry to hear that Hope passed away. I wish I could have been there. She was an awesome, sweet Lady. I worked with her for a short time for Richard Greene. I will always remember how helpful and sweet she was did not matter where I saw her. She was a true lady and I feel lucky to have known her. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you, Randy, Roxy, Rhonda and family! God Bless all of you!

We have know the Martin family all our lives and our daughter’s Barbara & Lynda grew up with Roxy, Rhonda, Randy & Roddy in Marblemount, Wa. My first husband Andy worked for Martin Bros. Logging Co. for many years until he was killed in the woods in 1978. Your Mother is truly a wonderful person and all of you are so very lucky to have her as your Mother. When I would visit with Hope she never forgot to ask how the girls are, she was so caring and thoughtful of others, always had a smile, she was a BEAUTIFUL person inside and out. Hope will be missed & loved by all the hundreds of friends and her family. We love all of you and will never forget Hope Martin….God Bless all of the Martin Family…

    Roxy and Family…
I was truly saddened to hear of the passing of your mother. Just as my sister Lynda said, she would always remember me too when she saw me (I would visit with her sometimes when I saw her in Cardiology). And the story my folks tell me all the time…. everytime they would see her she would ALWAYS ask “and how are the girls?” I’m sure you kids are all proud to have had such a wonderful mother. She was truly the sweetest woman I have ever known. She will very missed by so many people that loved her. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Hope was a truly selfless person whom I will never forget. I will always remember the many visits she made and the shoes she bought for my sister and I after our dad passed away in 1978. She would always ask how my sister and I were doing, and anytime I saw her she always remembered me–even after all these years. She was such a wonderful, caring, and kind person whom I will never forget.

The memories Hope leaves behind will be treasured forever!
