JACK O. MAST, 76, a resident of Skagit County since 1936, died of cancer at his home on Samish Island on Monday, July 15, 2002, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 3, 1926 in Spangle, WA the son of Orval J. and Marie Augir Mast. He was raised in Hamilton where he attended grade and high school and was active in multiple school sports. In 1943 he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps, serving during WW II. Prior to his enlistment he married Jeanne Ashton, now deceased. On May 18, 1974 he married Doris Baird in Marysville, WA and they made their home on Samish Island since 1975.
Jack worked in the timber industry for many years, owning his own business, and later working for Janicki Logging.
Jack was an active member of the Samish Island Volunteer Fire Dept., a life member of the M-V Elks, Lodge 1604, and the American Legion Post 43 in Sedro-Woolley. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Sedro-Woolley where he served as a Eucharist minister and was a member of the Parish Council. He was a member of the RCB Chapel in Indio, CA where he was involved in numerous other service organizations. Jack was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking, passions he passed onto his children and grandchildren. He and Doris enjoyed extensive international travel, visiting continents of North & South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.
He is survived by his wife Doris at the family home. His children, JoAnn Mast, Michael Mast Lisette, Therese Keels, F. Dennis Roswold Judy, Jannis Brown Howard and Thomas Roswold Kim. One brother, Vern Mast Colleen. 20 grandchildren, Robert Michael Fountain Katrina, Gabriel, Christopher Aislinn, Damian, Annelies, Brigitta, and Helena Mast. Nathaniel & Noah Keels. Kristin Terry Esskew, Robert Kristina Stephens, Courtney Brown, Kenny, Kathy, Shawna, Greg, Cherie, Nicki, Abe & Jeff Roswold and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2002 at 1:00 PM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in LaConner, WA. Father Patrick McDermett and Deacon George Peterson Celebrants. The family suggests memorials be made to the Skagit Hospice, the Samish Island Fire Department, the Mount Vernon Elks or the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center. Private inurnment will be at the Bow Cemetery at a later date. Services and arrangements under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
