JAMES ‘JAY’ SMITH, 81, a resident of the Marblemount community passed away on Friday April 11, 2003 at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. He was born February 6, 1922 in Lake Preston, South Dakota, the son of James M. & Othildie Larson Smith. He was raised and attended school in Lake Preston and after he completed his education there he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1940. He served during WW II as a tailgunner in bombers, was involved in the NATO Berlin Air Lift and served in the China, Italy and Burma Theatres. After his discharge in 1962 he met and married the love of his life, Floreta Sharp, on February 6, 1963 in Olympia, WA. There they made their home and Jay owned and operated several gas stations in the area. In 1973 after his retirement he and Floreta moved to Marblemount where together they built their own log home and Jay enjoyed being with nature and putzing around the house fixing things. He was described as being ‘a very good husband, father and grandfather and an excellent provider’. He is survived by his wife Floreta at the family home in Marblemount. His son David Climer of California, a grandson, David James Climer and a great-granddaughter Taylor Climer, both of Bellingham. Also numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. A memorial service will be held Tuesday April 15, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley.
