Jasper deHoog

Friday, February 27th, 2015

Jasper deHoog, 60, of Sedro-Woolley, died on Friday, February 27, 2015 at Harborview Medical Center from complications due to surgery.
The oldest of seven children, Jasper was born on August 16, 1954 in Zuidland, ZH, Netherlands. Jasper and his parents (Gerrit & Dingetjie deHoog) immigrated to the United States on the ship GROOTE BEER, leaving the port of Rotterdam on Sept. 26, 1955 and arriving in New York on Oct. 5, 1955.
He grew up in Sumas, Washington and graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in 1972.
Jasper served for three years in the U.S. Navy being honorably discharged in 1975. Following his service in the Navy, he had a lifelong career as a carpenter. Jasper had his own construction company for many years during that time he hired a 15 year old boy named Rusty, who became his lifelong friend and was always one of his children.
On November 26, 1983 in Bellingham, Washington he married the love of his life, Debbie Russell, where they embarked on a 32-year rollercoaster of life. They were blessed with 6 children who he loved more than words can say. No father was as proud as Jasper was of who his children have grown to be. During their life together they lived in Whatcom County, Bountiful, Utah, Umatilla, Oregon and returned to Washington in 2007 to live in Sedro-Woolley after the death of his father-in-law, Cliff Russell.
He was an avid fan of NASCAR, especially Dale Jr., but no race was ever complete until he received a call from his good friend Butch. Jasper was also passionate about making his friends and family laugh. A skilled trickster, he was always able to elicit shock accompanied by great joy and laughter.
He leaves behind his wife, Debbie (Russell) deHoog; parents Gerrit and Donna deHoog; mother-in-law, Diane Russell, his daughters Michelle Arnott-Sowers (Travis Sowers), Amanda deHoog (Steve Maloy), Brandie deHoog (Gabe Meyer), and Amber deHoog (Sam Pack), and his sons Rusty Rhoads (Amy Rhoads) and Gerrit deHoog. Also left behind are the joys of his life, his grandchildren, Eriyahna, Trinity & Thorin Sowers, Ameliah & Logan Maloy, Adrianna Atchley, Kensley Meyer, Hailee Hamilton and Julian & Josh Wilgress. His sisters, Jan Drucker (Al Drucker), Pauline deHoog, Geri Cheney (Bob Cheney), Carla Wernecke, Linda Powell (Matt Powell), Grace Summerford (Jim Summerford),  sister-in-law Shelly DeBruin (Dave DeBruin) and brother-in-law David Russell (Susie Russell) also been left behind, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; who he loved dearly.

Jasper was preceded in death by his grandson, Corbin Arnott Sowers (2001); his mother, Dingetjie (Dekker) deHoog (2005); and his father-in-law, Cliff Russell (2007).

A Life Celebration will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at 1:00 PM the Deming Log Show Grounds Museum.

So sorry to hear about your loss. My husband Wayne and I both graduated with Jasper and remember his smile and soft spoken demeanor through 1972. Last time we spoke with him regarding an upcoming class reunion, he had wonderful things to say of his family. Our sadness for you and your family at this time also comes with joy that we may see that smile in Heaven again someday. blessings to all~ Lori & Wayne Gardner

I consider it an honor to know Jasper. I didn’t know him well but he loved Debbie and that is what counted with me. I know that he is in a much better place now, and one day I will see him again.

  • Richard, Brenda Weeks & Family

Our hearts go out to everyone. Jasper’s early graduation will leave a huge vacancy in the family. May you always remember all those special times filled with love, joy and happiness. Loved watching you fish up on the river. Love and happiness were everywhere you went 🙂 May God wrap His loving arms around those who are left behind for now. Lifting you up in prayer!
