Jerry Allen Hayes, Sr., 75, a resident of the Alger community, passed away at his home on Sunday, September 2, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
Jerry was born on June 16, 1937 in Ventura, California, the son of Claude & Audrey (Flynn) Hayes. He was raised and attended school in Caruthers, California.
In 1956 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served his country during the Korean Conflict until his discharge in 1959.
On August 25, 1960 Jerry was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Poisel in Coeur D Alene, Idaho and they made their home for a while in California, later moving to Wapato, Washington finally settling in the Skagit Valley in 1964.
Jerry worked as a logger for 2 years until going to work for Weyerhaeuser in Everett as a log scaler, where he worked for nearly 20 years. He then worked in the construction industry building roads and highways with the Laborers Union Local 901 in Mount Vernon and Local 276 in Bellingham.
Jerry enjoyed riding motorcycles and snowmobiles, camping and gardening, but mostly enjoyed fishing for salmon off the Washington coast and in
Canada and having fun at a good potluck gathering with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley, at the family home. His children and their spouses, Jerry & Edie Hayes, Jr. of Alger, Nora & Eric Jensen of Sedro-Woolley, Roger & Lynette Hayes of Alger, Claude & Kerri Hayes of Big Lake, Judy & Don Brock of Sedro-Woolley and Russ Puppe of Alger; Eight grandchildren, Heather Torset (Sam), Stephanie Barnum, Andy, Coty, Raynee and Brandon Hayes, Derek Reed and Caitlynn Brock and two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Logan Torset; his sisters, Geneva Vick, Anna Warner (Dennis), Sharon Chapin and Chris Davis; his brothers, Ronald Hayes and Rusty Tholstrup and his step-mother, Della Hayes Phillips and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother & father and a brother, Bill Rafvido.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Monday, September 10, 2012 with Pastor Bill Heberling of the Bow Church of Christ officiating. A farewell potluck party will follow at the family farm in Alger.
