McFarlane, John and Janet Younger crop John “Jerry” Gerard McFarlane Jr, 80, passed away late on the evening of May 31, 2016 in Sedro-Woolley. Jerry as he was known to all of us was born on October 26, 1935, in Seattle, Washington. He grew up in Newhalem, Washington and for his high school years moved to Seattle and attended Roosevelt High. It was there he met the love of his life, Jan Duerfeldt and it wasn’t long after her HS graduation that she became Jan McFarlane.
Jerry spent his life providing for his family and being an all-around good guy and prankster. He did a shortstint in the Army and Navy. Out of high school he started working for the City of Seattle lighting department, working his way up in the company. He started as a meter reader in Seattle from there he returned to the Skagit project as an oiler and then a junior/senior hydro operator. He then bounced over to boundary powerhouse as a hydro operator in Pend Orielle County.
When he lived in Metaline Falls he learned how to fly an airplane as it was quicker than driving to town. Jerry became a reserve sheriff’s deputy for Pend Oreille County. He also did snow removal for Pend Orielle County. Jerry came back to the Skagit project and retired as the Ross powerhouse supervisor in Diablo, WA. Upon retirement Jan and Jerry made their home in Longview, WA.
He is survived by his children, daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Everett Cole, and Jill’s sons, Jeremy McClain, and Ryan McClain and his wife Stephanie; his son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Nicole McFarlane and their children, Cari, Liam, and Mica McFarlane; his sister, Nina McFarlane and her children Ryan and Teri. And many nieces and nephews, cousins in Seattle area. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, John Gerard McFarlane, Sr.; his mother Louise Disotell and his wife Janet on May 9, 2016.
A memorial for both Jan and Jerry is being planned for a later date. If desired, friends may make memorial contributions to the Lower Columbia Regional Cancer Center, 1615 Delaware Street, Longview, WA 98632 where Jan and Jerry both received exceptional care and aftercare during the last several years when both were diagnosed with cancer.
Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Jerry, along with Lee Look, was my good buddy in Newhalem. We traveled many adventures together. With both of us moved to Seattle, we continued to pal around, and in our teens became dedicated gear heads. Jan had joined our team by this time, and also contributed to many, many special memories. Jerry was the salt of the earth.
