Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, John S. Evans, Sr, 89, of Burlington, WA, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 as a result of an aneurysm at the Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA.

He was born on June 4, 1922 in Craddock,Virginia and grew up in North Carolina. He joined the Navy at 17 and fought in World War II in both the Pacific and European Campaigns. He spent 7 years in the regular Navy, continued in the Reserves as a Navy Recruiter, and retired as a Master Chief. He served our country for 42 years. He was stationed at NAS Whidbey Island when he met the love of his life. He married Imogene Morgan-Keogh of Anacortes on September 6, 1946 and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past September. He retired as a Union millwright in 1986.

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and spending time with friends and family. Throughout his lifetime, he was an active member of several Baptist churches in Skagit Valley. He was Past Master of the Burlington United Lodge #93 F. & A. M. several times and a member for over 50 years. He was also a devoted member of the following organizations: Abbottsford Lodge #70, Garfield Lodge #41, Mount Baker Lodge #35, 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, 32 Degree York Rite Mason, Skagit County Shrine Club, Eastern Star, VFW #933, American Legion #43 and F.O.E. #2624.

Actively involved in the Shrine Club, he was passionate about sponsoring children to get their medical needs met. He visited the Shriners Hospital for Children as often as he could. John cherished all children and treated each one as his own. He will be remembered as a very giving and thoughtful man who donated much of his time to helping others. He was a positive person whose sense of humor was always a bright light.

John was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Auberg, two grandchildren, his parents, eight brothers and four sisters.

 

He is survived by his wife, Imogene Evans of Burlington; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Milford Austin of Poplar Branch, NC; sister, Bert Holloman of Elizabeth City, NC, daughter, Billie Jean Shuler of Sedro-Woolley; son, John S. Evans Jr. Rockport; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Wally Stover of Everett; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandsons.

 

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 1:00 PM at the Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington with Pastor Leon Meyer officiating with Military and Masonic Honors to follow at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery. A reception will follow the graveside service at Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation will be available on Friday, December 2nd from 7:00PM to 8:00PM at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley. Memorials are suggested to Calvary Baptist Church or American Diabetes Assn or a charity of your choice.

    I will miss you more than even I could have ever imagined. You had the best sense of humor and could always make me laugh. Some of your sayings will stick in my mind forever and I’m sure to refer to them often.
    I am glad you are not suffering anymore and can be free back with our savior in heaven. Many people will miss you and all you meant to them I only wish my grandchildren Emily and Felix could have spent more time with you as the grow you could have taught them some life lessons they will not be able to get elsewhere.
    You have always meant the world to me and I will always miss you and remember our closeness forever.
