Lawrence J. Hornbeck a longtime resident of the Rockport area passed away Thursday, May 8, 2003 at his home at the age of 84 years. He was born July 18, 1918 in Clinton, Oklahoma the son of Earl and Carrie Calkins Hornbeck. Lawrence worked in the woods until WWII when he served with the Seabees with the US Navy in the South Pacific. After the War, he and his brother Leonard started Hornbeck Brothers Logging and in 1967 he helped start LB&R Logging. He was married to Clara Belle Cope and she preceded him in death on September 7, 1993. Lawrence was baptized on May 22, 1983 and attended various churches in the area. He was a member of VFW # 5056 of Concrete, Arnold Hekett Post #132 American Legion of Concrete and he formally belonged to the Elks. Lawrence served on the Concrete School Board for 8 years and he also helped establish the Steelhead Park at Rockport. He enjoyed hunting, raising his cows and horses and dancing. His biggest enjoyment in life was taking logging jobs that were too tough to tame. He loved skyline logging and topped his last tree when he was in his 70’s. Lawrence is survived by his son Leonard Hornbeck of Sedro-Woolley and Robert and his wife Sherry Hornbeck of Concrete. 10 grandchildren Ron, Randy, Chuck, Kelly, David, Daryl, Jody, Dustin, Tyler, and Teresa. 3 step grandchildren Shantell Taylor, Ron and his wife Kim Taylor, and Guy and his wife Jodie Hoy. 5 great grandchildren. A sister Annis Wilson of Bellingham, and brothers Leonard Hornbeck of Sedro-Woolley and Norman and his wife Lottie Hornbeck on Concrete. A sister in law Loretta Walker of Palm Springs, CA. Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Clara, a son William L. Hornbeck, a sister Alta Scott and brothers Rawson and Raymond Hornbeck.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at 11:00AM at Lemley Chapel with Pastor Rob Thomas of the Community Bible Church of Concrete and Jim Hill of Mount Vernon officiating. Burial will follow at the Hamilton Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Lions Club Eye Bank. The family would like to especially thank Lawrence’s caregivers ‘R’, Patti, and Barb.
