Leroy Sackman

Wednesday, July 13th, 2022

Leroy Arnold Sackman, 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather was called home on Wednesday, July 13, 2022.  A longtime resident of Burlington, he passed peacefully at his home with his wife of 71 years by his side.

He was born on November 21, 1931, the youngest of 7 children to Gottlieb and Katherine (Kries) Sackman of Sedro-Woolley.  He married Mollie Ann DeWitt on February 1, 1951, together raising two daughters, Melonie Ann and Candace Marie.

Leroy was a thoughtful and patient man who lived each day with integrity. He was a Korean War veteran who was employed by Goodyear Nelson Hardwood Lumber Company for over 40 years, retiring from Weyerhaeuser in 1997. He attended the First Baptist Church in Burlington and enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, woodworking and outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing and hunting in his younger years.

He will be missed by his wife, Mollie Sackman; daughter, Melonie (Ralph) Liening of Tacoma; grandchildren Jason Liening of Tacoma, Jared Liening of Electric City, Travis (Rachel) Liening of Coulee City, Hilary Liening of Tacoma; great grandchildren, Isaac, Andrew and Ellie Liening; sister-in-law, Betty DeWitt; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his daughter and  son-in-law, Candy and Dale Taylor; siblings Walter, Henry, Christine, Tillie, Violet, and Ernie; brothers-in-law, Gary and Billy DeWitt.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation be made to the Humane Society of Skagit Valley or the Burlington Fire Department.  Share your memories of Leroy and sign the online guest register.

  • Bruce Shellhamer

My dad, John Shellhamer worked at Goodyear Nelson for many years and thought a lot of Leroy; respected him and spoke well of him. When I graduated high school I worked summers at the mill, including the shut downs. Leroy patiently taught me a lot about the mill; about repairing, maintaining and cleaning things. He was a good man, I learned a lot from him, and it was a pleasure to know him.

  • Nanci Mays Sackman

Dear Aunt Mollie, Melonie and Ralph and family,
Uncle Leroy was one of the finest people I have known starting from the time of my becoming a member of the greater Sackman family 56 years ago. Just the nicest man with lots of knowledge of the family. He was so loved by Mary and Walter as were you, too, Aunt Mollie. We will always be thankful for all the help you give us after their passing. Melonie, our love to you and family. See you next time we are up.
