Margaret A. Harris

Margaret A. Harris

Thursday, September 22nd, 2022

Margaret A. Harris, 85, passed away peacefully on the morning of September 22, 2022 after battling dementia for several years.  She was born July 17, 1937 to Peter and Annie (Braun) Derksen in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan and moved to Abbotsford, British Columbia when she was 6.

After meeting her husband, she moved to Washington and married Joy Harris on Oct. 4th, 1952.  They lived in Whatcom County as newlyweds and then between Conway and Cockerham Island raising their two sons, Marvin and Mark.  After the boys were grown, Margaret and Joy moved to Sedro-Woolley where they lived the last 36 years.  Margaret worked a variety of jobs ranging from picking strawberries with her boys, seasonal farm work, and finished her working days at the Mount Vernon Senior Center with the Meals on Wheels program.  She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and gardening.  Camping always brought her happiness; it seemed to be her happy place, especially when the granddaughters joined them.

Margaret will be missed by her son, Mark (Valencia) Harris; granddaughters, Tracy Yorke and Jessica (Jake) Fitzgerald; great grandchildren, Kiahna Fitzgerald, Rileigh Yorke and Brock Fitzgerald; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joy Harris; son, Marvin Harris; parents, Peter and Annie Derksen; sisters, Mary, Susie and Helen and brother, Bill.

A Viewing will be held at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022 from 10:30-11:30 with a Graveside Service at the Hamilton Cemetery at 12:00, followed by a reception (location to be announced).

Aunt Margaret was more than an aunt to me, she was a very dear friend and will be missed by many.

  • Linda Provance

I so enjoyed Aunt Margaret’s quick wit and sense of humor. She could be counted on to “speak her mind” openly and directly. She loved family deeply and her life experiences gave her entertaining stories to tell and the ability to give sincere and valuable advice. I treasure the outings we had, where we would end up giggling like school girls. Although my time knowing her was much shorter than most, I will always be grateful for the way she welcomed me into the Harris extended family circle and made each visit delightful. I will miss her friendship very much.
